Also notice what John Godfrey is wearing under his jacket...a sweater and a wool shirt...not just a T Shirt. The photo of Vic France and Don Blakeslee at Debden shows Blakeslee wearing either a sweater or a vest. And in the shot of Manny Klette, the chest and shoulder area looks "stuffed"...likely again from what he had under his jacket to keep him warm. That means the apparent fit can change depending on the season, and if the photo was taken on the flight line before or after a combat mission, or the officers club.
Shrinkage is another factor, especially when judging sleeve length. Am not talking about purposeful shrinking, just the effects of day to day wear in climates where jackets continually got wet, and no particular care was taken to dry them...which means if jackets were often worn until they were dry, there would be stretching to account for as well...which then in turn could lead to a somewhat misshapen appearance...and that "been there, done that" patina that people now days sometimes pay to have applied.
Duane Beeson after fighting to bring his P-51B back to Debden after getting badly clobbered in the tail. He'd had to fly with full left rudder the whole way home.
I know we've had a few shots of Blakeslee but this is great and what I think is the perfect A-2 fit. Yeah he's whippet thin but talk about cutting a dash. Cooler than a block of ice in a fridge at the South Pole.
