So … the Show of Shows is over and we all agreed that we had a great time and picked up some cool stuff along the way. I picked up another pair of mint original WWII buckle boots today again for less than the cost of a pair of repros. Along the way I found some rare WWII fighting knives for my WWII knife collection.
I’m already planning and looking forward to coming back next year. For those of you who weren’t able to make it, I really hope you’ll plan to see this next year. I told Jan that this would be a great place for our next VLJ reunion. You have to see it, it’s just impossible to convey thru the written word just how much military stuff is accessible here. In fact this afternoon we saw a guy walking down the hall with a “Ma Duce” M2 Fifty Cal Machine Gun. It’s crazy …

How much did the 1918 cost? That's probably my #1 dream militaria piece.

Priced at $2000…. Sold at $1850.
It has an original 1918 LF&C sheath.

I had a customer from work offer to gift me what was said to be his father's M-1918 (father was in 82nd AB, his step-father an AVG pilot). When I went to pick it up, the knife was unfortunately a repro. The customer's brother had swapped the original out for a repro knife many years back and he had forgotten that it had occurred.

That's as close as I'll come to owning one. :(

While we're sort of on the subject...is there a thread on VLJ dedicated to surplus small arms? I'd love to see what's in some member's collections (if it's not against the rules).
I think there have been discussions in "Life Beyond the Internet". I live in California and great legend has it that the DOJ peeks in at discussion boards to see what's up. Don't know if that's true but we in Cali are loath to "show our stuff" on the internet. Everyone's paranoid as hell even though I think enforcement of dumb shit is actually nil. The California gun people are kinda weird in that if they think the 2nd Ammendment is an "inalienable right" then they technically should not obey but instead all they do is whine and cry. The only people actually enjoying their rights are the gangbangers and thugs. They are armed to the teeth and don't seem paranoid at all!

Burt, what is that knife with green handle? Its handle looks like aluminum casting One.
That’s an “Everette Knuckle Knife”
They came in Black and in dark Green. The green handle is the rarer of the two .

Show of Shows was a blast. It wasn't so great for acquiring A-2s and G-1s (most of them small, many of them in display-only condition, nearly all of them patched and/or painted), but there were some great deals on other jacket types, and if you frequent the "related gear" section of the VLJ, it was a goldmine: watches, shirts, caps, boots, all at significantly better prices than you would find on eBay. And even though it wasn't great for wearable A-2s and G-1s, just getting to walk up to these beautiful originals, handle them, and check out the details was worth the price of admission all by itself.

@Nnatalie and I both had a great time. The organization that puts on SoS (Ohio Valley Military Society) has another event later this year, and we're already planning to go. The dates: September 18-21. The place: York, Pennsylvania. You know what's just upriver of York? Middletown, PA. Burt and I are already planning to make a trip (pilgrimage?) to the old Rough Wear factory, and to see if there are any jackets to be found in that old manufacturing town.

One of the highlights of the Show of Shows was that I got to see an old fiend of mine and introduce him to Jan and Nat.
Jim Gentile has been a personal friend of mine for the last 15 years. He is a well known author, gun collector, and a close personal friend. If the name “Gentile” rings a bell for you that’s because Jim is the nephew of Eagle Squadron and USAAF Ace Don Gentile. If your into collecting WWII German pistols, Jim has written a couple of books on them . He also wrote the entire P.38 section in the Blue Book of Gun Collecting Values. I always look forward to spending time with Jim and sharing stories, because we both grew up in the Philadelphia area and went to the same dances , restaurants and concerts . As Jim likes to point out .. we probably dated the same girls but just didn’t know about it.! ;)
