Very nice!! That texture speaks for itself! Does John just have the one color of cape, I prefer a darker brown... then again when it comes to cape I suppose begars can't always be choosers

Hi Doug,

Thanks!!! I'm not sure that John has cape available in any other color than the one above. For me the issue didn't arise because I wanted a russet jacket from the beginning. Every leather jacket I own (other than one 1988 Saddlery) is either seal or black. I wanted something with a warmer, lighter tone that I could wear to work with khakis.

I also wanted a jacket that didn't look like an A-2. I still like A-2s, but it seems that recently, here in New Bern, every retired old fart my age and older is wearing some sort of A-2ish leather jacket. Most of them are wearing mall jackets, of course, but at a distance we all look the same. I walked into the coffee shop one morning last week and thought that I had stumbled into some sort of geriatric squadron, pre-flight briefing room. I'm not complaining, mind you. I fully understand that a few of those old farts wore more authentic A-2s earlier in their lives. Still, I wanted something that would stand out...but in an understated way...and a Goodwear A-1 seemed to be the best answer.

  , man that made me laugh!!

Listen you don't need to convence me, when it comes to flight jackets..for me only the A1 will do. I have to agree with your comments on color also, I mean I generally prefer a darker leather but russet is soo unique in todays world and the darker leathers really are everywhere.. john's cape is a pretty light colored veriety of russet though, as opposed to the darker eastman which is a dark russet - but lacks the amazing surface texture of the GW cape. Wonderfull jacket you have coming though, please..please..please take a bunch of pics for us when you get it.

Check out this recently made Goodwear in a size 46. Notice how the pockets are virtually identical to the ones in the Suit Up picture? Cool.

Yours ?
Looks like the same hide as mine with the same pockets. The skin is surprisingly thick and tough for sheep. Not as strong as horse perhaps but up to the job.

So, maybe the lighting conditions affect the color of GW's cape quite a bit? Because it comes off quite a bit darker in that picture of John, I like it emincely.

So is the Eastman's capeskin chrome tanned or vegetable? I found in the product description that it's analine dyed, but didn't see any other info specific to the production of the leather.

Compared to the original, the pockets on John's repro look like they're placed too far from the center of the jacket - much like an A-2.

Agree but I like them at that position compared to the original.

Doug, you finally back in the market for an A-1?

No unfortunately, still looking for a job. But it' never too late to know what you're working towards, and some motivation.

I've noticed the pocket spacing too with the GW, but apparently John's flexible and would make it anyway we'd want it, right?

Anybody know what tanning process eastman's cape went through? Will it weather over time or stay soo consistant

Just checked my ELC A-1 and the spacing is just like the GW. ELC used an original as a model.

Atticus, I keep checking here to see if your GW has shown up yet... any word?

Hi Doug,

Yes, it was here in New Bern the entire time I was looking for it. For whatever reason, it had gone to New Bern's main post office and had been sitting there since Friday the 10th. This in spite of the fact that my paralegal went to our downtown office on Tuesday the 14th and asked the people there to look for it.

I finally managed to replevy it from the main post office on Friday, this past.

why does the US postal service only employ folks that seem to oooz disregard? It's so very frustrating. Anyway, you got it! That's great! how does it smell?

Great!!

I've been trying to get some photos of it, but my weekend was pretty hectic. Hopefully, today I'll get chance to snap some shots.
