As an aside to the above:

Before we moved a bit further east we owned a place a short walk from the old airfield at Knettishall and spent many hours over there and many in the company of a friend who set-up then run the airfield museum for many years. They have a wonderful memorial located on the site of the former HQ building. For years the memorial was tended by Percy Prentice, who sadly passed in 2018. A real Suffolk gentleman with an accent to match who I had the pleasure, and honour, to know and call a friend. Percy would very often be down at the memorial tending it, planting spring bulbs, sweeping leaves in autumn and I would invariable stop for a chat or at least exchange a cheery wave. Now Percy had history with the 388th. Being a local lad during the war he, like a lot of kids over here, would spend time up on the airfield mingling with the guys ...so much time in fact that the group adopted him as their mascot and even made him a uniform. Percy was a good old Suffolk 'bor' and much missed.
