5 star b-10

There seems to be a decent amount of interest lately on here in the B-10 Fivestar offers, and it seems like a good opportunity for Fivestar to make some simple upgrades here, which would alleviate a lot of the questions, and possibly boost sales further. @Shawn Ali

A few suggestions:
--Replace the photos. The pics on the website present colors that appear way off, particularly the Olive drab B-10. On the photos note, include photos of the darker mouton collar used, which is a popular option.
--The sizing chart appears skewed, with many on VLJ ordering some version of Small or extra small, which is bizarre.
--The 'Olive Green blend' knits (while they look fine with the olive cloth offered) are too dark to be historically accurate in color. And one would think sourcing a lighter shade Olive knit, either blend or 100% wool, would be possible.

Not trying to hammer Fivestar here, just throwing out some friendly suggestions which can help everyone.

Yeah the sizing is a bit bizarre compared to others, but it’s actually almost bang on your actual chest size. I believe mine is the smallest (42). I’m 5’10”, 165 lbs, 41.5 chest. So they make some pretty darn big sizes as you go up the chart

I’m sure the colour changes with each camera used, but here is mine next to my Bronson. It is green, but with a bit of tan.

I'm interested in your impressions in comparison with Bronson. Weight, lining thickness, armhole height? I hardly wear my Bronson B-10 cause it's too warm and heavy for the weather when I can wear such jackets, and then the weather comes when it's already cold in it (or rather, what's below the back freezes :) ). We have a similar climate and I'm interested in your comparison.

Unfortunately it’s been too warm here Dimitri. 25 yesterday. I put it on for a quick fit pick and haven’t tried it since. It does feel a bit trimmer then my Bronson but I’m not sure if that’s the cut or the lining. I think it will be pretty much the same as the Bronson for warmth. I’m in the same boat. Probably won’t get a lot of wear, which is why I didn’t want to put big money out. Once I’m done with the a-2 it’s pretty much straight into parka season.

Many thanks! You saved me from wasting money. One B-10 is enough for me

I only got one because I didn’t like the fit of my Bronson. But in hindsight I probably should’ve got the next size down. I’m no expert on the b-10 but from what I can see in these 2 makes I would go with the cheapest price. No appreciable difference between them that I can see.

To save scouring for info in pre existing threads…
What is the collar made of and what is the zip and lining like?
Also, what are the options from 5* that you should opt for in order to get a reasonable representation of a wartime issued B-10?

Thanks in advance
Steve, it says the collar is mouton wool. Lining is artificial fur. My Bronson lining and collar have a more wooly texture. The 5 star lining and collar are very soft but I think the Bronson is a wee bit heavier and warmer. I find the zipper on both to be a pain in the ass. The male part is buried and it’s a pain to get it started without getting material stuck in it. The 5 star is a different shade of olive with a slight tan or khaki hue to it. I’ve never seen an original so I don’t know which colour is more accurate.

From the pictures, yours seems to be more khaki than olive indeed. Which one exactly did you order from the website? I took mine in olive (despite the picture being completely off), and the shade is, IMO, pretty close compared to the couple originals I've seen.

@Micawber appart from that, as Pa12 said, lining is indeed artifical, but collar seems to be genuine fur, at least that's what advertised on the website, and it doesn't feel off to me. The zipper is ok here, no issue zipping it up or opening it, but I see that Shawn advised on FB a couple days ago that they now have NOS made in USA Talon zippers available for an extra fee.

So to sum it up, if you want to get as close as possible to a wartime B-10, I'd go as follow:

- B-10 in olive colour
- Collar in a darker shade of brown, as per Blackboxr and mine's
- NOS Talon zipper if you feel the need for it
- The knits might be the headache here: Shawn's olive knits are too dark for a real wartime contract, so either you disregard that and accept it as it is, or you have some of MASH's knits delivered to him for your jacket, or you go with some mid brown knits, as sometimes seen during WW2. This one would be up to you.

I'm with the fellas above...

Bronson and 5star compared.
Collar on the Bronson is indeed sort of like curly more synthetic reddish thing. I opted for a darker shade mouton on the 5star, The website advertised reddish one, no me gusta!
Knits are darker green as mentioned, but doesn't bother me, they're pretty solid quality.
Lining is also different, not sure if a lot of difference keeping you warm. 5* is a softer lining though.
And shade, as you can see, 5* is a nice olive, while the Bronson was a tint lighter.
Sold the Bronson, because of the fit, although same size, was a bit odd and tight in some places.

Both are new in these photos, not sure what it will look like after some time and a wash or 2

Ok thanks guys, that gives me a clearer picture. I had had originals in the past during my collecting years but they have all gone to new homes. I have an ELC B-10 and B-15 but the B-10 it is getting a bit past it. I had a Bronson B-10 to knock about in and treated it as a work jacket before I passed it on as I found the sleeves too puffy / cumbersome and for one reason or another didn't have the enthusiasm to split the sleeve lining and do something about the filling. I had a white collared BR B-10 in my size but grew a little tight as my post cancer figure regained its voluptuous full bodied curves so that too went to a new home.

So I'm scoping out the market for ready made potential bargains [size 44+].
