Can't say that it's been a problem with my Perrys. All have sat well on my neck and have not developed the characteristic limp...

The gap resulting from the collar stand could allow the wearer to use a scarf with geater ease, couldn't it? :)

It could, but fortunately we no longer have to worry about neck chafing from frequent head turning in search of the enemy ... we have rear vision mirrors.

although, technically, so did they in WW2 as both the spit and the hurri had rear-view mirrors.

As did US fighters.

So there you have it ... with the more modern, closed cockpit design of the WW11 fighter, it was no longer a requirement to accommodate the neck scarf. A-2 makers were then free to drop the collar stand, and change their patterns to the simple collar without scarf gap.

As did Luftwaffe planes

Hehe...
debateably they helped, but a pilot would search like hell, just to make sure.
