Some of the 4th FG and a lot of A-2s

Wearing only an a-2 on January 1, they must be freezing!

I wore an A-2 last winter in the coldest temps I've probably ever worn one, -5 Celsius. On the top half I was wearing a thermal (merino wool) long sleeve T, this pseudo C-2 sweater thing I have and a scarf. I was actually OK but I wouldn't have wanted to be standing around for hours outside like that watching a rugby match in it. A big part of it though was that there was no wind as well that day which is unusual for here so I got away with it.

The thing is that under that A-2 they are likely wearing an under layer t shirt or vest of some sort, a wool shirt, tie and maybe c-2 or even mechanics sweater and the scarf. Certainly the guy on the far right of the pic looks well padded in his A-2!

That's what I'm thinking too. 336 were part of a complete 4th escort to Derben-Stendal on 1/1/1945 and this photo is almost certainly taken either prior to the op or afterwards.

And for all those reasons you guys just mentioned, it’s good to have an A2 that fits just slightly big. Those BOB and Mechanics jumpers tend to take up a bit of room under there. I’m like most in that I like them to fit T shirt trim but I’m fortunate that I have a second larger one for layering when the temperature drops to 80 degrees F here in Florida......;):D

Both of mine I can wear a t-shirt, shirt and a light jumper under. I can even at a pinch fit my submarine jumper under but TBH it's a bit of a squeeze and especially in the arms. The whole skin tight A-2 fit is a pile of hogwash and I think grew out of that trend in Japan a few years back to wear them super tight. From a WWII perspective it's utter arse. You don't want it to fit like a bin liner but at the same time you want room to wear an undershirt, shirt and thin jumper.

Completely agree. The photos tell the truth about trim A2’s . In the winter the guys had everything they owned that was warm on under them. Thus they looked pretty trim.
Take a look at the same guy in the spring or summer and his jacket looked a bit loose on him.

Dude of the Day...

Kendall "Swede" Carlson of 336 from Red Bluff, California. Ended up a POW in 1945 after getting shot down attacking an aerodrome at Kothen. Ended WWII with 10 victories (6 aerial, 4 ground). Flew combat in Korea as well. Goody included a chapter about him in his "Tumult in the Clouds".

First pic in a Jug, second in a P-51B...

I tend to agree with the above. Although some seem trim ;) 80% of the pics of pilots wearing A-2s during WW2, that I have accumulated... show them on the slightly larger side. And Im not talking short, but fit.
To add to what you say Tim, I also recon a lot of the trim vibe may also have come from retro 80s early 90's bomber-jacket fashion.
