Very cool photo. My kids are literally terrified that I will grow a moustache like the guy on the far right. Great for discipline though "if you don't finish your dinner, I will grow a moustache..." Now I have a visual aid.

that's Gene Valencia's Mowing Machine Division, their displaying their combined score while flying F6Fs in Ww2.
Valencia commanded VF(AW)-3 after the war, said to be the best Interceptor Squadron in the US Air Force.
amongst the young pilots joining that squadron was one Dan Pederson, one of the founding brothers of Top Gun...

Interesting how fighter pilots all have the same quiet self-confident look. IJN air service Lt. Hiroyashi Nishizawa was credited with 87 kills. On 17 May 1942, Nishizawa, Saburo Sakai and Toshio Ota performed a formation aerobatic routine over Port Moresby aerodrome without receiving any ground fire which was acknowledged in a note dropped that night on Nishizawa's base (they were given a bollocking by their superiors). He was killed as a passenger in a transport aircraft on 26 October 1944.
