One of WWI's greatest aces and almost certainly the Allies top scorer due to someone else fudging their kill numbers and pretending they got more. He was cool as a bloody cucumber in combat (my signature was his advice to all who flew under him). Mick Mannock VC, DSO and 2 Bars, MC and Bar. Big hero of mine...

He hated anyone who fought for the Central Powers which was cultivated after being exceptionally cruelly treated by them at the start of the War as a prisoner. When he heard that Richthofen had been shot down he said, "I hope he roasted the whole way down." He gave no quarter and didn't expect any either.
Stare says it all... pretty sure he was Irish?

Absolute badass.

This is an excellent set of pictures of Spitfire MK IXs undergoing field maintenance, @Kermit3D. Can I ask where you got them?
Thanks Lorenzo, it's from this photo gallery on Flickr :

Caption to photo of engine removal :

"When the above aero-maintenance crew of Fitters attached to Group Captain G.R. McGregor's Canadian airfield in Normandy read a newspaper item in which another Canuck gang of Fitters claimed their twelve and a half hour Spitfire engine change as a record, they were indignant. They can do the job in nine hours flat any time they claim and were proving it when the above photo was taken."

Many thanks, Guillaume!
That is a great Flickr album. And btw, I just noticed that one cannot download images from it. How did you manage?

British-Irish. English father, Irish mother. His place of birth is disputed.

What is certain is that he was awarded more gongs than any other British pilot in WWI and rightly so.

Incredible chap. Somebody should make a film of his life as it'd be an absolute ripper.
