Like I always say, nothing beats an original.
This is a n.o.s. example of the third model from the N-3 series, a Vietnam-era N-3B Flying Jacket made by the prolific Southern Athletic Co., Inc. in fiscal year 1964.
The N-3B, which was adopted around 1953 and continued to be used by the USAF for about 50 years (with some modifications), is an aircrew parka designed for use in Heavy Zone weather (-10 to -30 degrees C). It was developed and issued as winter cold-weather clothing. Real wolf fur was used for the hood trim on the model issued during the early to mid-period and was later replaced by synthetic material.
After MIL-J-6279H, the N-3B changed its classification from flight jacket to parka for extreme cold regions and became ground clothing.
The condition of this example is superb! It could easily be mistaken for a high-end modern reproduction, but it is 60 years old. The shell is spotless, which is very rare. The genuine wolf fur is immaculate. All buttons are present, and the blackened Scovill zippers are intact.
As a bonus, the factory tags are still present.
I'll let the pictures do the talking.
Regards,
Jorge
