In further correspondence with G+B, that 52" chest circumference of the size 40 was with the pleats closed and not including gussets.
It was suggested going down to a 38 might make the shoulders too tight and perhaps the sleeves too short.
Here are the measurements for a 38T
and with a chest circumference of 50" it seems still too large for a 40" chest or even a 42" chest.
I asked for measurements of a 36
After corresponding with another member it seems their older sizing was more in line with what one would expect. Seems their 40 had a 48" chest circumference at one time. Now that is the 36. Problem is the sleeves start to get get short.
