Jim Lovell G-1

I wonder if Glenn would of noted the manufacturers of his jackets? I certainly suspect that Armstrong, Borman and Young would... it seems more in their nature than say Lovell or Conrad?

Here is another one wearing this jacket... and another shot of VNF-311 pilots, notice that Glenn's name appears at the bottom of the Flight Schedule.

On an urelated note, seems like Glenn is wearing USMC P41 trousers on this picture!

Still amazed that I was able to pick one of the blue jackets up straight out of Houston, mine is from the third or fourth batch which had black snaps not silver as in these first editions pictured above, also the zipper on the cigarette pocket is enclosed on mine and exposed on these earlier ones. It is quite usual to see astronauts in groups wearing jackets from different batches.

Wow great find on the NASA jacket.
Those sleeve pockets are designed to hold a smalll emergency beacon light, not cigarettes.

Hey, Oose. Who made the yellow NASA flight jackets you see time to time? I think Tom Hanks wore one in Apollo 13.

The thing I love about Hanks is how well he can get into presenting the motivations and feelings of the character. Is he the most method, most convincing, most believble? Maybe not, he always comes across as someone playing a character. But it's the way he inhabits that character that does it?

He and Ron Howard also made a very faithful mini series "From Earth, to The Moon" which is brilliant. The CGI looks low budget now, but it doesn't take away from the episodes. Casting seems to switch between dead likeness and those who maybe don't look like the real astronaut but understand how to portray them. Largely pretty accurate with the costumes too, if I remember correctly?

Sky,

Hate to disagree, but I actually have the specs for the L-2 jackets and they are indeed designed and called out in the instructions as “cigarette pocket with pencil/pen stalls”. Though not as popular today literally everyone smoked at that time. Hell you could smoke in court, movie theater, and at the Doctor’s office.

Ciao for now,

Yes I see it in the specs now and I stand corrected. I saw it referenced as a "Personal Emergency Locator Beacon Pocket" in later flight suit specs but can't locate that now. It is also in the CWU-36-P Summer flight Jacket specs as a "Cigarette Pocket". That was still left in the specs after the revisions in the 1980's.

So cigarette pocket it is!

Just finished my first NASA-MSC jacket reproduction, based on this one owned by Jim Lovell...

And here is my reproduction of the same, though I'm still waiting on the patches to arrive, the jacket is looking pretty cool, if I do say so myself. I will have the proper Land Mfg labels made soon, assuming that these jackets become a popular choice. Currently the jacket just has a generic label that John and I had made with the name Rainier. Original NOS Conmar zipper on the cig pocket and Scovill main zip. NOS United Carr "Dot" snaps complete the look.

Excellent! Great work. I like the reinforced stitching on the pockets. Get the label done and I would say you would have a 100% correct reproduction.

I would have to re-think the B-10 if this came up in a 46/48! Looks awesome. I also love that yellow/gold rev.
