The man clearly knows how to wear a G-1... now on display at Mitchell Gallery of Flight. Does anyone have a better photo of this jacket?

I like that matching flight suit collar sticking up on the guy on the left. Fold it down over the jacket and you have a whole new style flight jacket with a collar.
The G-1 looks great! Well worn.

Still amazed that I was able to pick one of the blue jackets up straight out of Houston, mine is from the third or fourth batch which had black snaps not silver as in these first editions pictured above, also the zipper on the cigarette pocket is enclosed on mine and exposed on these earlier ones. It is quite usual to see astronauts in groups wearing jackets from different batches.

One of these has been on the wish list for years. This just reminds me how much. The worst thing is Buzz could of easily recreated this?

What Maker of G1 is Jim in, do you know?

Hi All,

In the not so distant past I had some correspondence with Jim Lovell. That topic was with regards to his squadron patch as seen attached to his first issue jacket. He wore what I thought was a WW-2 era night fighter squadron as seen on that jacket's right breast.

As explained to me by him, that is his VC-3 patch seen on his jacket which comes from his 1956 Shangri-La deployment https://www.navysite.de/cruisebooks/cv38-56/205.htm & used by the squadron during that time. In reality that same patch is a copy on the earlier WW-2 era VF(N)-90 patch.

Lovell was one year ahead of my father whom having done flight school in 1954/1955 verses Lovell's 1953/1954, With that in mind, Lovell's jacket looks like an early 7823 (AER) model G-1. But not 100% certain of it's maker.

Without seeing it's makers label & if I had to guess it is a L.W. Foster made G-1 jacket and the earlier modeled styled after the AN-J-3A. I suppose that I should contact him again and ask!

In the movie Apollo 13 Lovell mentions his experience with VC-3 and his 1956 deployment.

Cheers Dave

Thanks Dave,
Great info, I agree it looks like a L. W. Foster, I've owned a couple, one of the best G-1's in my experience.

Tommy, I have only seen one other for sale in the last five years (other than in Space auctions) see pic. this one was from the same batch as worn by Al Worden. From my research there were at least four different batches of the blue cloth jacket provided by LAND MFG to NASA. Keep searching one will eventually come your way, it took me about six years to snag one.

Dave,

When was the pic of Jim Lovell taken? He looks in great shape.

I don't know him personally but having read a lot about the space program it seems he's a real gentleman.

Lovell is a great hero of mine, along with all of the Astronaut and Cosmonaut Corps. He's also up there with the late John Glenn as one of the best public speakers from his generation of NASA. There are some great Lectures featuring various full crews or individuals from different fights from the Smithsonian available on You Tube. Lovell having made 4 space flights features frequently and gives a great account of his adventures everytime.

His G1 in the second picture of him looks in pristine condition. Do you think someone reproduced it for him or at least has done some restoration work for him?

Hi All,

Yesterday I emailed Jim Lovell with regards to finding out the maker of his flight jacket with the VC-3 night fighter squadron patch attached to it. In my inquiry I qualified my question with the explanation that my father had entered the same flight school immediate following his leaving. Explaining to him that my father's 1954 issued G-1 jacket was made by Cagleco and included that label's image.

Jim's reply was as follows:

Dave,

I have no idea who made the jacket I had at VC-3. That jacket now resides in a museum. I assume the company made all the jackets at that time

Jim Lovell

Like most of the veterans I've spoken to about their issued flight jackets in the past, I'm afraid Jim's jacket maker was never of any real consequence to him.

With that said, it is time to contact the museum that now maintains the jacket and get this question answered!

Cheers, Dave

A lot of interesting information. Thanks for sharing.
On a side note, my 7823C (WEP) Foster is my go to daily jacket. Glenn's Star would be quite the prize. Hard to believe he was a size 42, though it was an early '60s issue.

Ha, he was my size. Little bit taller though. He always worried about staying lean, so doesn't suprise me that he was what would've been a bigger size. Along with Slayton, he was the most heavily built of the 7.

The only images I have seen show Glenn wearing one with a VMA 311 patch? Of course he would of no doubt had various ones issued. Wonder why he chose to take the name tag off this one though?

I would love to be able to buy one with a badge and name tag. Not to wear, but to donate to the Science Museum in London or the Space Museum in Leicester. Or even to the American section at Duxford. Course I could probably buy a house for that money?
