Jacket/Coats of choice in this weather (UK)

Oh dear, I went to private boarding school so maybe I am doing a Blair (God forbid!), back in the punk days it was Joe Strummer and me that had to explain our public school backgrounds...always hated the British class system! Duffel Coats were also the choice of poets and folkies in the 1950's.

I've found that an N-2B with a heavy sweater and a scarf has been very effective and not too bulky over the last few weeks.

A military shop near here in Aldershot claims to have some for sale from the Long Range Desert Group...

I wonder how they know, as far as I can tell the Duffel's worn by Stirling and some of the LRDG were standard RN type, nothing on the labels state which service, my 1943 one just has 'Duffel Coat, size 2, Redman Bros 1943'. They got issued to all services including post-war and often can be seen worn by 'Boffins' in old documentaries such as the British rocket testing at the Needles, Isle of Wight.

If its' good enough for the US Antarctic Program then it'll do me just fine and dandy :D I have an older version I bought second hand in calgary back in about 1990 which I used to use in northern Canada doing seismic surveying. The are awesome.

Dave,
That is cool looking. However, us here in N. CA could not wear something like that no matter how much we want too. :(

Then, Greyhound, you are cursed. Her in the UK we get a chance to wear every jacket / parka under the sun at some point in the year. And I love every one of those four seasons for exactly that reason !! :D

John, I remember the Redline. True it made you look silly but by God they kept you warm for the packed down size of them. The Canada Goose doesn't do that as it's longer, has middle and lower drawcords and all the pockets and heavier material keep the down in control better.

Besides, don't those big shearling jackets do the same sort of thing ?? Bulk up the top half massively

I agree, I've seen some guys wearing Irvins and B-3's (usually at Duxford shows) that made them look top heavy with Max Wall legs!!
