Ja Dubow 27798 (Platon) A-2 jacket review and pics

Everything was pointing to a size 40 but from advice on here I went with a size 42. Snug with a sweatshirt or bit looser with a Tee Shirt. Perfect. I didn’t worry about the communication, just crossed my fingers and it all went well...

Hi,

I did order a size 42 and got a 40 ish, turned out fine in the fit though. I also sent my measurements when I placed my order, so he may have taken these in account?

Lord Flashheart see here for updated measurements

I re-measured and corrected with

Shoulder---- 17/ 3/4
P2P---------- 22

Posted a while back by Technonut2112:

size 40
pit to pit 21.5
shoulders 17.5
back 24.25
sleeve 25.25

size 42
pit to pit 22.5
shoulders 18
back 24.5
sleeve 25.5

For example to me pit to pit and shoulder measuring system is problematic. My PtP is practically 44,01 inches and my shoulders between 50 - 51 The most common estimate used in ordering jackets does not normally take in consideration other measurements, like thickness of arms etc. In my opinion system described above is really usable. With this I am not anyhow critisising the jacket I bought from AERO

Thanks Dany and London Cabbie that's much appreciated.

I'd seen the measurements posted by Technonut and worked on that basis. Im usually a 40 so I reckoned 42 was the right way to go based on reading posts here. I do subscribe to the idea that aircrew would get what they were given by the QM. I did send my own measurements using Platons sizing guidance when I ordered so we'll see how it compares. I'll keep my fingers crossed obviously !

I’d be interested in Grant’s opinion on Platon’s sizing. IIRC correctly he got a size 42 jacket and decided subsequently to get a 44? Or something like that? My memory isn’t what it used to be and I could be wrong (apologies if so Grant) but that’s what I recall, so I think his view would be a good guide.

Actually I’ve just read the whole thread and Grant’s comments are in the first few pages. From the whole thread my take away is that generally you should size up one on your usual size to get a good fit as Platon’s listed measures are slightly generous compared to what actually ships. And,
Hem, hem, depending on beer tummy, maybe two sizes.

I’m really very tempted to order one... and I’d go for a 42 I think...

Based on my measurements, Platon suggested ordering a size 38. It just did not sound right to me as I am a size 40 for most A-2s. I ordered a size 40 instead and it fit just right.

Going back and using Platon's sizing method after I already ordered my usual size 44 is what influenced me to switch to the 46..

EDIT: Couldn't have asked for a better fitting A-2:

Looks good on you.
Platons jackets just seem to run small to me even if he’s using WWII sizing measurements .
I’ve checked an original Star in 48 and a Roughwear in 46 and neither of those have a 25 inch back length. That short back length was the only thing that stopped me from going for a size 48 . Now those aren’t available any longer . He makes a very nice jacket and the price is right .

I just carefully measured the GW RW 27752 that JC directly patterned from an original tagged a 44, but for some reason tagged it a larger 46. The measurements are EXACT to my 46 Platon Dubow:

GW RW 27752:

Pit-Pit: 23.5"
Shoulders: 18.5"
Back Length: 25" (all the way to end of knit waistband)
Sleeves: 25.5" (all the way to end of knit cuff)

I'm not sure why he tagged the jacket up a size. I'm just pointing out that it has a 25" back length. Perhaps he thought the original was large compared to others that he had the opportunity to work with, and more like a 46. Here's the back of my jacket in a comparison pic:

Wish we still had Platon here to comment directly. I don’t half feel the phrase “cutting the nose off to spite the face” is quite apt! And all these folk worrying about lack of a reply to email would have had a direct hotline!
Maybe he sees this and or can be contacted via Facebook.

Hinted at same a few times in ZuZu's posts. (Who is oddly quiet, along with DD - perhaps a team rethink on stategy). Platon is not interested. Focusing on the jackets and letting them do the 'talking'....

I contacted Platon a while ago about variations in measurements. He replied that it's impossible for them to make jackets that vary in measurements, because they use patterns and it would actually be difficult to change anything. He suggests that the variation in measurements poseted by customers is the result of different measuring techniques.

The measurements of the 42 seem fine for me based on the measurements I took from my ELC Star. But maybe I didn't meausre the latter correctly, so the 42 may not fit me that well. I shall find out in April when I go home. If not, keep an eye on the buy/sell section, I'll be selling a Platon Dubow 42, new with tags ;)
