Hello everyone, my name is suziq I love vintage stuff of all kinds tbh. I tend to get really obsessed about a particular thing (at the moment vintage leather jackets) I purchase some lovely goods, shoes, boots, watches, audio equipment. But the one thread seems to be vintage! Anyway… I don’t know how long the leather jacket thing will last until I become obsessed with something else, but while I’m here thought I might as well share with you pictures of the lovely leathers that I’m acquiring. It’s the leather that I find beautiful. I’m not into the military thing, I just like the leather, cuts and styles of different eras. Anyway that’s me, hope you like the jacket that came in the post yesterday!

Thanks for looking! I don’t know either! It looks good on me and whatever the leather is I think it’s lovely! Looks 50s 60s or 70s to me. That doesn’t nail it down much though. Nothing on the maker online so…
It’s nice

Good to have you with us! I can’t help much either, I would go for 60’s but that’s nothing but a guess. Trouble is with civilian stuff, unless it’s a well-known company like Sears or Montgomery Ward, there’s so many companies making them it’s hard to find much information-it’s a lot easier with military stuff! Do us a favour, if you’re posting more pics (hope so!), use the full image option rather than the thumbnails? Lots of us have trouble viewing them-it’s been a problem for a long time but there doesn’t seem to be a way to get rid of them.

Good to have you here. I can't help you with details regarding your jacket. But there is still a Regency company in Canada that makes leather jackets.
Perhaps the Regency MFG Ltd. was the predecessor. Just ask the company if the jacket was made by them in the past.

Hi, thanks for the welcome. I didn’t even know I was using thumbnails! I will have to work out how to upload the full picture. Sorry bout that. 60s split the difference! I think it’s a bit 70s but who knows. The leather is thin. I don’t know what that is either. It doesn’t feel like cow. I’ve ruled out sheep or lamb possibly goat or horse? It’s lovely leather whatever it is. I kinda look at the leather before anything else, then the style, the craftsmanship and lastly the brand! I’ve bought expensive stuff that has disappointed me, cheap unknowns that have wowed me and vice versa. Usually though people who use good quality leather are not going to cheap out on the crafting. Style is another thing.

Thanks for that it could be! There is a tag on my jacket that says 55 water st Vancouver. They could have moved or been taken over I guess. I looked at the address on google maps it’s an old factory building that’s now been turned into a shopping strip apartment complex.

I’ll pitch in and guess 70’s judging by the collar shape/style! Welcome aboard, if you stay though you might end up getting all nerdy like most of us here, be warned!!!

Yeah, I'd agree - '70s. That sort of zig-zag edge leather backing on the label seems to have become pretty popular around then.

Interesting mystery--I enjoy the known brands because there's more info out there, but the unknown ones make for some fun research! Are there any tags with numbers besides the one in your last photo?

I found some ads in Canadian newspapers for Regency leather jackets from the late-70s and early-80s. There were only a couple pictures, and neither were identical to your jacket, but most of the ads were picture-less, so that doesn't say much. It's also quite possible that the company started earlier and just didn't show up in these ads until the end of the 70s, so it's just a rough idea.

Here's a 1982 ad for a bomber-style jacket

Welcome Suziq! Nice jacket, I'm not sure about the kind of leather, but it sure has some character and interesting grain. The jacket has a 70's feel in my opinion, but I could be off on that.

Thanks for all the replies been busy. Had to get back into my other life that pays the bills and buys nice vintage stuff! I’m currently doing a water test on the leather to try to work out what sort of leather it is. It’s just sitting there beading. It’s been 10 minutes now!

Well. The jacket is highly water resistant. Took 1 hour to go. Goat, horse or plastic! For it to be plastic though the manufacturing leather tag with the hide symbol would have to be totally fraudulent. Here’s a close up of grain if anyone is interested

Thanks for the research Nnatalie! That’s something. The only other thing I have found is a sold item on Etsy. Seller advertised it as 80s. Similar to mine but not the same. There is only one other tag on the lining 100% acetate and the address 55 water st on the back of the same tag.

If I had to guess, goat: it's pretty pebbly, and '70s is well after horse's heyday. Also, even back in the day, horsehide jackets almost invariably had some kind of label identifying them as such.

Yeah I really don’t think it’s plastic. Sometimes there are no definitive answers! Nothing much on the company and the type of leather is best guess if there’s no tag. Given the condition it’s in for its age including the black one I just posted, it probably is goat. Your right about most of the horsehide being gone after 60s. However, the jacket is Canadian, if the people running the business were French Canadian they may have used french leather connections. The French eat horse from what I’ve read, so the leather comes from there. But these things are all just possibilities. Don’t think there is going to be much I can prove about this jacket with regard to either age or leather type. So it is what it is, a nice jacket with nice leather! I do enjoy the endeavours of trying to find things out though!
