Good B-11 and B-9 Parka repros?

Real McCoys have a b-11 repro out now. 2020. Alpaca lined. Size one down from your usual size as its oversized.

I think Meacham gave up on collecting jackets... he was here for a brief while all enthusiastic and buying jackets thendisappeared never to be heard of again. He ain’t needing that advice anymore ....

I got an Eddie Bauer B-9 repro on Ebay about a year ago. Warm and well made.

I saw an original this summer at a flea market. About a size 38 and the knits and zipper were shot.

A WW2 original B-11 in 44” made by Moda Coat in vg wearable condition sells for much less than that... plus shipping... ;)

correct :)

I sold all my jackets a while back and haven’t missed them. I spend my money on stuff I’ll actually wear these days, mostly tailoring.

I quite fancy an Aero in the future, but of a civilian design instead.

Still haven’t lost my passion for WW2 tho!

When the mercury drops and the wind howls my go to parka is an Eddie Bauer B9. They “reintroduced” it about 10 years ago, when EB still made decent quality stuff, complete with AAF shoulder logo. Not a perfect copy, but super warm, and very well built.

That's the one I have. Wearing it today since it's about 19 with the windchill.

Can anyone provide any insight regarding this jacket? Authentic? Good or bad repro?

Hello bfd70,

Based on what I've seen with the Type B-15 (cloth), I'd risk saying it's a post war civilian production, closely based on their military contract.

Some contractors produced some kits after the war and they were from identical to slightly different as time passed and material became scarce, like Talon M42 or just newer parts and fabric.

Can you show the zipper, as it's a reliable time frame helper.

Post war civilian copy of a B-9.

Genuine USAAF B-9 parkas only ever have a proper spec label in them, and the distinctive thick down filled quilted lining.

As it happens I was photographing one of my Reed Products Inc B-9s earlier today:

Ben Greenholtz also did a wartime jacket with a pink lining, which looks a bit odd but is a legit jacket:

Any B-9 with a label that says ‘type’ or ‘parka’ or something is not a genuine issue item. Equally, any B-9 with a different pattern lining to what you see above, is not a legit B-9 either. Ebay is littered with these, decent, not but genuine AAF issue B-9s, here are a few examples:

Lining on this is a dead giveaway, even without the label. It’s a smaller pattern of quilting and not as thick:

AAF B-9s never had a split hood:

The label on this one says ‘army Air Force style’, buy even without that, again the liner is a giveaway. Compare it to my Reed wartime jacket above and you can see the quality of this one is inferior (I’m not even sure these post-war ones are down filled)

here’s a dud label:

Some have these more decorative pattern quilted liners, again, post-war copy

There’s nothing wrong with these post-war civilian jackets, they look well made and are probably pretty warm, but don’t be fooled into thinking they’re genuine USAAF issue items (and paying over the odds for one). Unfortunately, genuine AAF B-9s are rare and cost a lot of money, particularly the Eddie Bauer ones (unless you get lucky).

Thanks for the detailed replies. Appears that it’s just a homage. Not disappointed. Didn’y know much about them so I wasn’t hunting for an original. Hopefully it’s warm. I didn’t pay much.

Happy to help. You certainly shouldn’t be disappointed. I saw the jacket and you basically paid peanuts for a well made, warm 1950s/60s winter coat.
