Five star D-1 opinion needed

Hey everyone,

Winter is coming and my trigger finger is itchy again, I'd like to get a new jacket for this winter but don't want to break the bank. What is your opinion with FS D-1 - house brew or repro Weber? the price is not "cheap" but not over the rood either. Do you think the jacket is worth it price ; quality wise? Thos of you who own one I'd appreciate some pictures and some advice on the sizing,

I've had good a experience with FS in the past over a lovely M421 jacket I bought last year which naturally inclines me to buy from them again, but if you have other maker recommendations in the same price range I'm all ear.

Thanks

My "house brew" 5 Star D-1 has been my go to winter jacket since I received it 3.5 years ago. I ordered it with thicker fur (same as the B-3), so it's not a "real" D-1 per se, but apart from that, it's a truly amazing jacket for the price point.

It looks really nice! Which one did you go for? 5* has several models now. And what size?
I think I will stick to the thinner mouton as I want something more practical than a B-3

It was the first version of Shawn's D-1. I went down one size, following their chart, went for a 40 with added sleeve length.

I’m not a fan of the D-1 in general but, about three years ago I bought a B-6 jacket from FiveStar. It’s not the same model but it uses the same 10 mm sheepskin. Here’s some of my thoughts about it:

The pattern was copied from an original, which is very nice and accurate. Super comfortable at the right size.

The only issues I had with it were the sheepskin and the zipper.
The leather side of the sheepskin was very inconsistent in thickness, with some spots being almost paper thin.
The fleece wasn’t very dense, which made the jacket not suitable for cold weather.
The zipper was very flimsy and the puller kept getting stuck for some reason.

In my opinion this jacket was more suitable for reenactment than regular wear.

I hope it helps!

I got a Werber D1 from them a few years back, just had them add a little to the length of it due to my long torso, and I love the way they made it, not stiff like an ELC, more soft and broken in, but like everyone else the zipper pull was a pain in the ass until I replaced it.

I just got a Fivestar Werber D-1 and here are some thoughts:

- the zippers don't do that sideways movement described and pictured above
- however, the pocket zippers are a bit of a pain to operate, not a smooth pull, but given the direction of the zippers is a bit unnatural I'm not surprised
- the jacket is surprisingly light, however my experiences with shearling are pretty limited
- the arms are really wide especially near the arm holes. Great for movement but feels somewhat michelin man'ish
- did not see anything construction wise that I could complain about
- measurements were almost dead on accurate compared to what they report on the website

I'll see later how it works in the cold since it still is intermediate jacket weather here. The boxy fit of the jacket near the hem does not seem ideal for a cold weather jacket though, but we'll see.
