Fab new RAF jacket from Aero

I spoke to Ken on Friday shortly after he sent me the link. He explained that at first they thought the material was too russet in colour until they checked it against the sample they sent to the tannery. They were surprised to find that the two were identical. There is also a darker brown version and other panel configurations in the pipeline. All the details are there in the link to the website.
Interesting that no one spotted than the arms are slightly rotated. A small issue with the pattern that needs to be ironed out.

Does the jacket look a little long in the body to anyone?

It's a step forward from the previous incarnation. I'd like to see the jacket when you have the later example in hand please John.

Burton, this looks a bit long and narrow to me as well, but I guess the jackets were not all boxy. My Links was wider/shorter.

I like the multipanel variant and this is a good choice for Aero, although I'm not taken with the pattern of the panels on the original (bit too symmetrical/Union flag styled for me - I prefer the smaller triangular panels that are seen commonly).

The stress at the centre of the shoulder blades where all the panels meet looks a little strained/puckered too - presumably as a result of the Union Jack stylee... Smaller panels might relieve the stress.

I too prefer a less busy pattern but this is the one Aero want to make for the time being. Just to add that the amazing Devon fleece from ELC will be unavailable for several months yet possibly not until autumn.

Looks a million times better than their older offerings. The arm pattern is far better, and the fleece looks bang on to me. Priced pretty sharp as well.

And by the sounds they're still tweaking it to make it better. Good on Aero, they'll sell a few of these for sure.

And PaulGT3, I have a ELC 1940 Pattern which has the honey coloured fleece that Andrew mentioned. Looks bang on in terms of fleece colour to many originals.

Cheers,

Tim

The skin colour of original Irvins varied from russet to very dark seal. A chestnut brown finish was perhaps the most typical. I used to own a later War Links jacket that was very similar in colour to the new Aero jacket. Here's a link to some photos taken by the guy I bought it from. viewtopic.php?f=7&t=5293

The seam configuration of these later Irvins was extremely varied as most were made from recycled flying trousers. The diagonal seam tape configuration on the back of the Aero is far from typical. Most had horizontal seam and often diagonal ones on the front.

I really like it, what is the deal with the 50's zipps ? where do they fit into the "original" picture,. Irvinandy???

The post War zips have been used because they closely resemble Wartime Lightning zips and are much closer to original zips than the "AM" ones normally found on Aero Irvins.
