So when the AN-J-3 was created, the A-2 was declared “limited standard issue.” For a long time, we thought that meant no more ordering A-2s, but that’s not correct. All it meant was the A-2 wasn’t the latest and greatest equipment anymore, and procurement people inside the Air Force needed a reason to buy A-2s. And they did continue to buy them: the last three A-2 contracts were ordered after the A-2 became limited standard issue.

What killed the A-2 was this document (it’s short):

Got this Alpha B-15 Mod on its way to me size XL

Looking to place an order with GW for an AN-J-3. Need one like a hole in the head but it’s the best of both worlds regarding an A2 and G1 so hard to say no. Plus it would be great for work!

Alpha B-15 mod has arrived but all the knits are ‘blown’ and full of moth holes (not superb as describe by seller). However I’m happy! Shell is fine, all zippers are good and I only paid $50 for it. New knit set has been shipped by MASH Japan and my local tailor is versed in knit replacement. Might get a dry clean too before the knit swap out. This is a very rare jacket here in the UK and more so in XL, it’s the version with wool / cotton in the interlining and subsequently quite heavy compared to modern poly fill. Has taken me 5 years of regular searching to find this one.

Hi BN1966,

You know that Alpha never had a B-15 contract and that this jacket is a repro? I don't want to sound negative just making sure you don't have a bad news moment down the road since you are investing cash in this one, etc.

At the same time if you are happy with it, thats whats important!

Cheers Dany, it’s fine, I know it’s a repro the shell colour is a lot more accurate than their ‘Vintage’ series and the textiles and zippers used are very good quality, the series it notable for a red n gold label on the cigarette pocket. Had one of these years back (the one in the photo) and foolishly sold it on, I struggle to get shoulder width and these come in at 22” which works for me. I don’t mind throwing a bit of money at it! That would never come back to me but it’s unlikely I’ll sell it, MASH knits n swap out costs are peanuts to what I used to spend on projects. Saved a ‘Vintage’ series B-15 at Xmas, needed a new waistband knit so got a MASH one fitted and a couple of minor repairs, jacket was fairly cheap to buy off Vinted initially.
