Can we temporarily stop registrations?

According to Nathan, we already have a Captcha system in place (yeah - I totally forgot about that too), but he’s going to dial up the difficulty on it. a few will still undoubtedly get through, but that should help.

Sadly it does not appear to be helping Jan as I have just reported yet another spam post. IIRC my second such report today.

Yeah, I've been zapping 'em as soon as I see them, but it doesn't seem to be having much effect. I wish there were some better way than Captcha to prove that a new member isn't a bot, but I don't know of one. :(

Captcha's aside as they are just one line of defence, it should also be possible to tweak the software settings via the Admin Control Panel but this does require a knowledge of the particular software or raising a ticket with the provider.

One way is to handle new registrations manually and checking each individually. But of course this is somewhat time consuming.

My still recommendation 1Euro..
AI already overruns all Captcha BS.
I raised the possibility with Nathan. He said it just isn't feasible with our forum. He didn't say why, but IMHO, we don't have the cyber infrastructure in place to ask for payment.

If it provides any comfort, he said TFL is going through the exact same thing, as are most other forums on the web. We just have to keep hammering them.

Two cents.

Arch Linux is a DIY operating system that experienced computer users employ to develop their own personal operating system using only the components they prefer, like choosing PipeWire versus PulseAudio for multimedia. And GitLab is a place where software developers share/develop/deploy their computer code. What's on the Arch Linux Users GitLab site?

Due to an influx of spam, we have had to temporarily disable account registrations. Please write an email to [email protected], with your desired username, if you want to get access. Sorry for the inconvenience.

This certainly shows the extent of the issue. I have no idea how VLJ would (could?) manage this, maybe review e-mails every few days, but it's a possible solution path.

Hi. I don't know if something was changed in the forum settings or not, but I can't log in to the forum for over a week now in the usual way, neither from a desktop nor from a smartphone. Now I've only managed to do this with a VPN (which is also blocked here and works very unstably).
