No, not the antithesis of "harmony." My work has transitioned to using the social platform Discord for internal communications, and it seems like a neat platform with a lot of possibilities. Since it's quite popular with a lot of people in a lot of different fields and hobbies, would there be any interest around here in a flight/leather jacket themed Discord channel? I've never made a server on this app, so this would be a bit of a stab in the dark, but it could be a fun way for us to communicate in new and interesting ways. :) Or it could just peter out into 1 or 2 people checking in once a month.o_O

(And if the answer is a polite but firm "not interested," I won't be offended. It's a bit of a pipe dream.)

IMHO, Discord is akin to social media and as such would dilute the main forum.
I do use Discord a lot, but I must say you are not wrong on this one, I've seen it happen quite some times. That being said, I think if you want to go for in depth reviews, long run topics like "what jacket are you wearing today", things like that, the forum will still be a better place.

And on the other hand, I know I've refrained from posting things I would have gladly shared on a Discord chat room that I had found too trivial to create a post in here.

So yeah, definitely worth a try!

What with the lukewarm reception to this idea back in September when I proposed it, I had shelved the idea, but recent comments in the "more spam!" thread have led me to reconsider.

Sometimes the VLJ is running slowly in the country you happen to live in.

Sometimes you REALLY want to be able to talk with your friends without some bot showing up to tell you about crypto.

If this is you, come visit THE VLJ OFFICERS' CLUB.

Who counts as a "VLJ Officer?" Any member of this board whose account is 90 days old and has 25 posts. Any Mod from here who joins will be given Moderator status. I think of it as a backup, a more private section of the board for members of our community to relax and chat about jackets and life in a slightly different venue. :)

How do you join? Sign up for Discord here. Once you have an account, in order to use Discord, you can download their app, or just use it from their website. The app is more convenient, but the website is a good option. Once you have Discord, follow THIS LINK, and it'll take you to our server. Click "join server," and you'll be able to see the #welcome channel. Send me a message with your VLJ handle and I'll promote you to "Full Member," which will allow you to visit all the other channels: #general-jacket-discussion, #jacket-du-jour, #vintage, #repros, #jacket-art-and-patches, #denim-vintage-clothing-and-boots, #other-interests, and #flight-deck.

For all that these channels resemble some of the larger sections here on the board, nothing can replace the VLJ, and Discord does have its limitations. In some ways, it's more like WhatsApp than a traditional forum. You can't really start separate threads. Every channel is just its own ongoing text conversation. No "What Jacket Are You Wearing Today" thread - although I suppose we could start a channel for that. But there are advantages: since Discord is worldwide, there shouldn't be any local connection issues. And I've set up its automod to delete any message with the words "crypto," "cryptocurrency," or "bitcoin." ;)

don't need yet another sign in. instead of establishing a sub group, which would have a diluting effect on the vli, why not just a "can not post until you are a member for 30 days". or something along those lines to serve a spam deterrent
