Here is one that got away, only to be caught later.. :D

I was runner-up bidder in the original auction for this Goodwear Perry recently. For whatever reason, the buyer bailed on the deal, and I was contacted by the seller for a 2nd chance offer. After a few moments of juggling finances because I have since purchased other jackets, I pulled the trigger, for what was IMO, a very sweet price for one of JC's Perry's... ;)

If the seller's measurements are correct, the jacket should fit damn near as well as if were to order a new one. :) The pics were not the greatest in the world, but the seller has great feedback. I do find it curious that the jacket was listed as steerhide however.. Going through the seller's listings and sales, it seems that ALL of the A-2's listed and sold were described as " " colored leather, or excellent quality steerhide leather. They had another civvie jacket listed as horsehide before, and it was clearly labeled as such on the jacket. I'm wondering if the seller only lists the leather type if it is tagged on the garment?... Either steer or horse is fine by me for the $$ regardless... ;) If it's horse, I'll consider that a bonus..

I wonder how many steer Perry's were made by John?

I've always liked the looks of the Perry myself. Going back over the close-up pics, it does look a bit like goat.. Hmmmm.. I think I remember seeing an old post here showing one of JC's Perry's in a pebbled horse that looked like goat. That wouldn't be bad either. ;) Kind of fun wondering which it will be.

Mystery solved... I just received word from JC that the jacket is indeed goatskin. It just happens to be the Indian goatskin that I have seen pics of before, and greatly admired. :D The jacket was made around a year ago, and photos of it when new will be used to represent the Perry contract on Goodwear's site at a future date.

I'm also in like Flynn regarding fit.... Wow! To start out thinking, 'more than likely steer' to' maybe horse', to 'waitaminute, maybe goat', to a positive ID of Indian goat. Sometimes things can work out even better than anticipated, and I even ended up with a Perry in one of the proper hides for the contract. ;)

I'll post pics in the appropriate forum after the jacket arrives. :)

EDIT: Here is a link to the pics of the Perry when new:

This guy is famous for shill bids.. Heaps of jackets get relisted....some four times over?

If he has a shill running up bids, I would fire the shill for not doing their job. ;) I went over the seller's feedback, and found that damn near EVERY leather jacket sold went pretty cheap. For example:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/USAAF-STYLE-A-2 ... 7675.l2557

http://www.ebay.com/itm/EASTMAN-SPORTSW ... 7675.l2557

http://www.ebay.com/itm/SIMMONS-BILT-MO ... 7675.l2557

http://www.ebay.com/itm/AAF-STYLE-A-2-F ... 2051923627

I would imagine the lower than average prices are due to piss poor pics which do not show the jackets well at all, and not making an effort to ID the leather type of jackets that do not specify the leather type on tags.. This seller has made the 'seller's I follow' list for certain.. I don't want to miss any jackets listed. Most I've seen have been in larger sizes to boot. :D

Agree wth you. I have two jackets from him at bargain prices. Shipping though can be a little expensive. Seems to have an inexhaustable regular supply of originals and quality repro jackets as well as other interesting and rare militaria on occasions. Claims he is selling this stuff for others which seems very plausible given his lack of detailed knowledge and let the wind decide attitude. The bigger mystery is who is supplying him with his quality stock.

His old ID was motelbuyer. Perhaps they get pilfered by cleaners at Motels?

Go through the older posts regarding his relists. I guess you have to drop the price if the high bidders are not actually paying and other buyers wise up to what you are doing...

And prices are roaring downwards. Won't tell you what I sold my GW Cooper for. :(

The Perry arrived yesterday. I was concerned that the jacket was shipped via UPS, since I've had MANY issues with them over the years.. UPS must be upping their game, because their ground service got the Perry here in two days. :) From the same part of the country, it used to take 3-4 IIRC.

I will post pics later in either the Repro, or review forum, but for now, I can say that I now see why JC's Indian goat is coveted by many.. ;) VERY nice, substantial, grainy, crusty, goatskin for certain.

However.. As much as I like it, I was originally expecting steerhide, with the expectation of horsehide, considering the past history the seller has of not accurately ID'ing the leather types not labeled. The Indian goat was a pleasant surprise, but I still find myself wanting a GW in character-rich horse. :? I more than likely will place a WTT post in the Buy-Sell forum. Hopefully, I will find someone in the same size who has an itch for the popular Indian goat, who would be game for an even swap for their GW HH.. ;) I like most of the contracts available, but would need to have nice, curved, scalloped, pocket flaps.

Hmmmm.. I have been having second thoughts about possibly trading the Perry for a horsehide A-2. The more that I learn about it, and how well it fits, the more I want to keep it... ;)

If I get some sun here today, I'll try to get some good pics, and a brief review up. I have one that I'll post here before I post in the Repro or Review forum (also posted in the 'hat' Outerwear forum):

I thank those who have contacted me with some VERY tempting trade offers. :) If I do decide to swap at a later date, I'll post in the Buy/Sell forum. ;)

In the end what matters is that it feels good when wearing it. The fit looks excellent, if you wear it comfortably and are at ease with it then I wouldn't want to trade it for something else. The basic dimensions usually given are just a part of what determines the wearability of a leather jacket, and there are many details that differ but are difficult to measure. Trading one jacket for another is always a gamble.

I had a fair number of horsehide A-2's but the goat one is the one that gets worn, not because I wanted goat so much but the package just came together and it is the one that feels good.
