Who said the market is down!

The seller does say "This is not a cheap jacket." ;)

It's a grand jacket, but you're right -- Holy Cow!

I looked at the bidding and confess that I don't understand it. It looks like the bidder, 4***4, is bidding against himself, the other bidder, f***f, stopped at $ 4,999. Can someone enlighten me as to what's going on ? Is 4***4 bidding against a unseen phantom sniper program :?:

Can you imagine the buyer's remorse on that one? (Once the novelty of it all wears off)

Has anyone seen an A-2 go for more than this one?

The bad thing about this sale is that some uneducated sellers are going to see this and think that their and every other A-2 is worth this kind of money.

Super nice jacket, but..............................

if i remember correctly, the last ebay record was the werber that gary bought a coupla years ago. somewher around $8000, i think. however, in garys case, r&d. possibly a tax write down as well. oh yeah, buyers remorse on the $12500 jac. note to myself: only do ebay stuff when sober.

I know of a fair amount of other jackets that have sold in the same area. About 3 years ago, Tex Hills jacket came to market for around 50K. Not sure if it sold? I actually sold a jacket a few years back for not much less than this one went for.
Once you get into that kind of money, personally, I start thinking of all the other great things a person could buy. Fishing Boat,Harley, ect..... to each their own. There's no doubt it's a great jacket!

If the buyer did NOT meet the reserve, don't you think the seller would consider the lower amount? Or make an offer to the highest bidder once he saw what the market set his price at? At least it said that in the listing. I didn't think the jacket was that spectacular, although the P-51 patch is quite rare. For the money it sold for, I would want the jacket to have belonged to a famous individual, with provenance, for an investment.

I think that amount of money for a jacket is crazy until I think of how much money collectors spend on entire collections or groups of jackets (originals and repros) over "x" years. Being that as it may, I would have a hard time justifying it. Guess it must be nice to have that much cash to buy a cool jacket like that (I am assuming the buyer actually DOES have the cash!)

Guys
The 'worth it or not debate' aside and while it looks a truly fabulous jacket and I'm prepared to be 'shot down' on this, but please correct me if Im worng (I'm sure you will!!!) but the black lightning patch shows a P51D which wasn't around when surely this jacket would have been worn very early WWII? I'm only guessing it was added later when serving elsewhere in the PTO perhaps?
Would put a nagging doubt in my mind if I had had the money to bid for it - I'm intigued to say the least!!!

Cheers

I think that this jacket was from the 118th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, which was part of the 23rd FG in China from late 1944 - 1945. They flew p-51D's. This is a relatively late war 14th AAF jacket.

This is correct. There is often confusion with the 1941-2 AVG and the later squadrons in the 14th AFF. This last Aero contract was issued in 25th May 1942 with production running into 1943, so a later War date fits very well.

Clearly, the market is most definitely down. My apologies for getting off track by focusing on the market rather than the jacket. I see items underachieving true value. Of course "Holy Grail" articles will hold value a lot better than the more common.
