Early ones where goat in general - i own 2 Imperials from a 1971 contract which are steer/cowhide - the leather is thicker and more sturdy

There have been other makers which stamped their leathe rto give it a goatskin look

I was wearing a pair of LVC 201's in that photo, but you're right that the LVC Japan denim will take some wear to break in.
