Werber 42-1402-P

this is the first goatskin i have seen of this contract, in fact, i did not know that they were made of goat, as well as hh. anyhoo, the hides look very dry, and possibly fragile. the submitted measurements would say a size 40. nice for looking at, but i would not consider it a wearer, for reasons stated.

It's hard to tell from the photos if it's really goatskin or not. That would be news to me - I didn't know Werber made any jackets from goatskin. I suppose it's possible.

It's made from horsehide like all jackets from this small contract. The leather does look dry in places and I agree the jacket may not be a regular wearer.

could be wrong on the hide. just that the first impression of the grain looked like goat. a werber in goat? never heard of it. but, with these old timers, theres always the exception to the rule. went back to the listing, and damn if some of that deep grain grazing doesnt look like goat, but yup, there are other areas that look like hh. dont remember seeing a bird as odd as this.

It's all horse. Some of the skins used on the Werber are pebbly and do resemble goat, but are horse. Poughkeepsie A2s sometimes have sections of leather that resemble goat.

Doesn't look like horse to me, could very well be steerhide. Even though it wasn't government spec'd it was used.

for years now, chappy and i have been batting around the idea that some wwll a-2s were indeed made of cow hide. most notably aeros. this would help to explain some of the anomilies that late war aeros display. is it possible that other makers used cow? why the hell not. back to the werber. odd duck, that one.

I thought I read some sort of US Army spec sheet for A-2's from the period saying steerhide was an option. :?:

That would be a major piece of evidence ... let us know if you ever find it again.

Exactly. Good luck getting that degree of patina with goat. Roughwear is all over this one, like white on rice.

althought its not the document I am thinking of, on page 105 of Suit Up! there is a letter stating that "the supplies of horsehide (available for flight jackets) is limited and that sheep and calfskin leathers should be avialable for emergency use"

to see this in the book you will need a very high power magnifiying glass, page 105, third mini-page. Perhaps its larger in another publication?

Thanks, yes, I've read this with my jeweller's loupe. :)

Since the document is dated 1932, I assumed that they were thinking more of the B-1, B-2.

How did this one end up at $1K?? Also, the zipper is not the correct talon, but it's really hard to tell if it was replaced or not. It almost doesn't look like it was replaced, but how is that possible?

zipper replacement? yup. very keen prostaff. the buyer of this one is going to be in a state of shock upon receiving it. open up the box, and the jacket falls apart in his hands, due to dried out hides, and dry rot. that orangey hide stuff that passes for "patina" is a dry rot red flag.
