I just had to write today and here was the reply. Just an FYI.
Dave

Hi,
Thank you for bringing this to my attention. The paint on the top of the patch is part of the initials JDK-J.D.King.This is painted underneath the group patch. I know this because the vet told me of this when I bought it many years ago. I belive in full disclosure and it will added to the decription. Moreover,FYI,the paint splaters of the initials are red and yellow. The colours on the patch are blue and orange!!This jacket is a direct vet purchase and is straight as rain!!

I don't think the seller is trying to decieve anyone. He presented many detailed images. The 8th AF shoulder patch is handmade and the person/veteran that made it could have easily applied his skills to improve on the 388th patch. I believe the 388th patch is vintage and just had some extra work at some point to protect or make it last. I buy the explanation for the paint spots.

Art restoration is big business and sometimes controversial. However we wouldn't have the Mona Lisa or The Last Supper without restoration. Most veterans did not raise their jackets to the level we do here on the forum and they often take measures to preserve their jackets and artwork. They mostly have no idea of the value to collectors. This jacket was very well done and all the details I look for on a 388th patch are preserved - nothing extra added.

This is a typical 388th patch which was ink stamped and colored by hand. No varnish or protective coat was added and since they were dyed and not painted they faded and the leather would break down.

This is typical of a patch that was not coated.

This is a reproduction I made and coated with a clear acrylic.

Great design and, Shedonwanna, what a beautiful repro. Still don't buy the wear on the SSI vs the chest. The well worn example you posted is likely more how it started. Why a few printed blach lines are faded while others adjoined to colored areas are shiny is curious. The original you posted shows none of the same inconsistencies. And don't get me started on the back!
Once a seller has been caught fiddling, and this one has on several occasions, it's a tough sell to assume there is no intent to deceive.
A reputation takes years to develop but only one minute to destroy.

As usual, just my highly self-thought-of opinion,
Dave

He posted this jacket on VLJ years ago as it was sold, so I can say for sure the dye was not used on the patch. He does deserve the skepticism however, with his recent paint shananigans. As Dave said, it takes years to build a good reputation, but only seconds to destroy it! Too bad as he has a great collection of REAL jackets that will more than likely suffer when he decides to sell them. Hey wait, actually, maybe that's a good thing for the buyer!

If this one is truly messed with, someone shelled out $4,200 for a forgery

That's just it. It isn't a forgery, it's real as can be - just augmented. He can do that all he wants, just tell what's been done.
like adding that CBI patch last year, don't make excuses of why that wasn't revealed in the description, just sell them for what they are. The speculation is he wants to sell them for more than what they are.
