Because we all know that every jacket was custom taylor fit, and no one could possibly have had an ill fitting jacket. absolutly no chance of a jacket being too baggy, or sleeves being too long or short in 10's or even 100's of thousands of jackets issued.

So true. When you arrived at the QM's, you were, being an Aviator, Hero of the Skies, reverently welcomed, offered a cup of coffee or tea, and a nice young lady took all your relevant measurements. All to ensure that a tailormade, formfitting jacket was made for you. Shoulderdroop, tunneling, too wide, too short, too long were of course unthinkable. After having your measurements taken, you were offered a second cuppa, and were then shown the colour & hide charts: would you like it in goat, hh, or perhaps very daringly, steer? Perhaps a touch of grain here and there? And what colour would sir like: russet, russety, boarding on toffee coloured brown? Ah seal: excellent choice sir; can I recommend the purplish knits with this one? Ah sir is a daredevil and a fashioncognoscenti: you go for the orange knits, very 1944 if I may say so! Very well sir, we will make your jacket to order and deliver it within the next few days. We'll call to see if you are home first .... AND THEN YOU WOKE UP, just having been thrown the most ill fitting leather jacket with, as far as you are concerned, a shitty colour. But hey, it's your leather jacket from now on, so you make do with it....

Excellent! And when you got to Europe you probably wished for something with a little more room to wear something warmer underneath on those long, high altitude escort missions.
