Well, since the cartoon syndicate actually owned the rights to Terry & the Pirates (and may still?), I'd say them.

Caniff walked away from T&tP because he couldn't get the rights. Walked to another syndicate with Steve Canyon and they gave him a better contract with full rights to his characters.

Not sure who owned Super Mouse, but that publisher is either gone or swallowed by a bigger publisher.

Looks like SM could be public domain.
Question for you Chandler, those vintage Max Berman Disney studio patches that sell, is Mickey, Donald, Dumbo and others still copyrighted as everyone copies them now

I'd believe so -- Disney is a company very protective of its trademarks and copyrights.

Though, if they're reproducing something used in the war, it could be different... but making money off Disney owned characters could be chancey.

Thanks Chandler, I like those Max Berman studio painted wartime canvas patches that appear in the USA they're all back stamped also, but I haven't ventured into buying any yet

I think this is an interesting area to contemplate - if anyone knows about copyright law, is there any legal remedy to an artist if someone creates artwork "in the style of?" For example, Felix the Cat - if a contemporary artist hand-paints a cat that is very recognizable and influenced directly by Felix the Cat, is he or she infringing on copyright?
Copyright infringement is a topsy-turvy sort of legal battle anymore. The Warhol estate just lost a case because they couldn't prove provenance, or something. But a trademarked character might be difficult to defend as "in the style" of a certain artist or studio.
