Topic for Conversation : Why are members leaving VLJ?

I think it can be due to several reasons:

1) Real life gets in the way, and people can't participate anymore
2) Their interest shifts to other things
3) The interest is still there, but I for one cannot keep buying and selling jackets forever - eventually I've become 100% satisfied with my collection, and I only visit these forums out of interest in the knowledge shared by other memebers, to get some inspiration, and of course to see all the great photos.

I agree completely with this arguments.

I have come and gone over the years, its not that I have lost interest I still collect and research, but I really left when the forum became open access, I much preferred it being a more select bunch where you could discuss ideas put up some photos and research and get feedback from a knowledgeable crowd, but now those posts and images are visible in google, something I did not want, so I don't put any of my collection or research up anymore. Many people I conversed with have left or are not very active, it’s a shame because I used to enjoy it here. I still lurk in the background and will occasionally pitch in.

Respectfully, I really don't understand this point of view. It's like saying, "I prefer not to educate any but the already educated, or share with anyone who doesn't have something to share that I want."

I've been sharing esoteric knowledge in several fields of interest (notably music and instruments) for 20+ years now, and I never felt it was a waste to make things public. What I know is not my intellectual property, it is part of a great legacy to be passed on. Doing so is a joy to me.

I am quite happy to share within the forum but I don't necessarily want ever post I write or photo I upload available to the whole world, thats just the way I feel, I preferred it when it was a little more contained.

Strange point of view considering that Vintage jackets are an obscure interest in the first place ! . So whats the worry with posting it to a world on the net that maybe .0009% will read anyway ? .If we all took this posture there would be nothing to read on the forum until it was locked down again .

so, zoomer I agree.

I have a question. So, if this were still the closed forum it used to be, what would have happened once all those with knowledge passed on? Now at least they can share that knowledge with younger folk like me who can help pass that on.
anyway, my three cents.

VLJ would go back to the days of having the annual general meeting in a telephone kiosk and a dozen posts a week.
Think back not so long ago when every new member was waterboarded by one or two of the old members

Being consciously respectful and gracious sometimes requires one to place their ego in check, while they seek to understand. The key word being “consciously” as we can easily disrespect someone by poorly chosen words, such as “so called”, when that is not the intent. It’s always easier to communicate with someone in person as body language conveys the majority of our thoughts and I think about that when I write as I do not wish to offend.

With that said, yes, I miss learning from Andrew et al and hope they are all doing well and will return. I'm thrilled Ken is still here.

I have multiple degrees in engineering and science and while I only wish to go off facts, the fact is we usually only have opinions to go off of when learning something new. For this reason I encourage differing opinions because they may be right and I may learn something new, so I don’t want a “disagree” button as this may shutdown a constructive conversation (the key word being “constructive”). In addition, the separation between facts and opinions is not always clear, such as the lively conversations on the A2 silk lining until the actual US specification paperwork was presented to show all original maker A2’s were only lined in cotton.

On the other hand, internet trolls ought to be respectfully ignored so I’d suggest an “ignore” button instead of a “disagree”. Based upon writing style and intent trolling may be intentional or not, but an “ignore” button would let them know to clarify or they’ll simply be ignored. If the response is constructive then respond accordingly, but if the response is deflective, i.e., “what about this?”, “what about that?” or “what about some other thing?” then just ignore them. I do.

Agreed, an ignore button has its uses. There isn't anyone on here I would use it on at the moment. :)

Perhaps new members should be required to study and pass through three degrees of knowledge and their individual examinations before being fully admitted to the Lodge, more commonly known as the Forum. That should keep the riff raff out and assist in maintaining an air of snooty superiority ;)

It's a joke BTW.

Given the nature that everyone is unique and with unique circumstances, also some may agree and others not on various topics, people do what they do and for reasons of their own, I believe this question may never be answered. Who are we to judge?

All of the above are valid points, even the surfing Mickey and Tim. Andrew was huge into the stuff but the interest began to fade I believe when a certain person he knew well who was in the war passed on, and with it the reason that only Andrew will ever know, other priorities come to the for as they should. I share the same view since my wife had cancer and recovered a while ago, my interest has shifted back to my car days, and that’s something we can do together, and spending time with someone I love is far more important than any leather jacket thingy.
But, it doesn’t mean I’m out, I’ve just changed gears to something else. You sometimes have to change down when you come to a tight corner, if you want to keep the same momentum.

Like fashions and culture shape different decades, so I believe VLJ is changing gears with a new generation of people taking on and in some cases taking over where others had once been. Is this good or bad? I think neither, for it depends on your view of things and of course theirs. Some people call it change, some progress, some may even think it normal, whatever, in my view it’s just what happens and has been for Millenia throughout the various forms of social interaction.

I note no one has responded to Talkonuat's suggestion about more lady members! I'm sure they'd be most welcome but doubt there's few out there if they're anything like my other half!! She's likes a nice leather jacket for sure infact we bought her one for Xmas but she can't get her head around why I have so many 'similar' jackets and spend time on a forum talking about them!!!

What Jeremiah said Matt, you hit the nail on the head.

I've said it somewhere else on here before but I still can't believe how wound up and shitty some people can get to others around this so-called "hobby". It's just clothing FFS. Yes people went to war in these things but at the end of the day it's just pieces of clothing.

There's so many more things in one's life which are so much more important. This stuff is just a dalliance so it's really not worth being an arsehole to other people about it.

In terms of a dislike button, sorry but that would just cause more shitstorms. I already question the worth of a like button. If I started a forum I wouldn't have any like or dislike buttons. If you like what someone's posted, say so, if you disagree with someone about something, have the balls to say so. Serial arseholes are easily dealt with using the Ignore button thingy.

Serial arseholes

What an amazing phrase!! I must remember that and use it more in conversation;):D!

I confess that one or two (well one really) of the former contributors Bman-2 might be referencing left me feeling they were the personification of that phrase more often than not, and dare I say I’m not missing them. Just my view of course, and all the sensible analysis of life’s rich pattern prior in this thread won’t change that sadly.
