I always loved the photo of Ploesti raid. Also love the ME-410 banking off after firing it's 50mm cannon (hitting the wing in photo). Without escorts, these 410s and 110s could do heavy damage. With escorts? Then it was a turkey shoot for the little friends.

The B-17 in the jive camouflage is one of the original dozen service test ships assigned to the 2nd BG in 1937.
The scheme, IIRC, was OD, tan, black and white(!) - applied with washable tempera for war games.

"Flyin Florence" is a B-26 Marauder of the 320th Bombardment Group, her noseemblem is one of 4 "variations" of the "Group" emblem I've seen .

The ME-262 is one of several that the American unit called "Watson's Whizzer's" test flew here in the US aftre they were brought over , the name was obviously an "american" added touch , I have a photo copy of an actual "Watson's Whizzer's" patch , it had Donald Duck riding a jet engine motor pod that is going around the earth in the background .

YES! I'd also love to see the patch. German aircraft of WW2 was always my specialty, and I've read a lot about Watson's Whizzers since I was a kid. I'd love to replicate an A-2 with that patch as that program had a huge impact on aircraft development.

2nd to last shot of the A-2 and B-3. Check out the stitched-together hide on the B-3.
Great shots,
Dave

I too am looking forward to seeing the patch.

I had read about the ceremony following Lt. Robert Strobell's maiden voyage in the captured Me-262 which is reprised in the Stormbirds link. I thought it would be worth posting it:

After landing, I taxied back to the hangar area and climbed out of the jet. I related all of these experiences to the other pilots, and they capped my day with a real class act event: Ken Holt and Bob Anspach walked over to me, and without hesitation removed my Army Air Corps insignia. They broke off the propellers and stuck the wings back on my collar while advising me that I "no longer needed the propellers," since I was now a jet pilot. It was perfectly timed and precisely appropriate for the moment. It remains an indelible event in my memory.

Hi All,

The Me-262 project up in Seattle is owned and run by my Dad Bob Hammer.

http://www.stormbirds.com

I have a lot of pictures and memorabilia from the Me-262 we restored for the US Navy originally from Willow Grove NAS. And, before that it was brought to Patuxent River for full flight testing. that is how the folks up at NAS Willow Grove got her. They were going to scrap her, and the guys up at Willow Grove asked to put it on display with other captured aircraft they had, the airplane "Vera" is now been moved to Pensacola, FL for display down there.

we had the pilot of "Vera", and the Crewchief of "Vera" come by the project in Everett many times. We have a picture of him with the restored airplane. Currently "Vera" is the only true 2-seat Me-262 on display.

Here's the wife and I in Seattle in '02

this picture is of Franz Stiegler. He has visited many times. He was a Me-262 Test Pilot and Training Pilot. GREAT stories.
We helped him up to the cockpit and he sat there for an hour or so. we didnt think we could get him out of there! :D

The man on the left is our test pilot Wolfgang Zaria. The man to the far right is the Messerschmidt Foundation president. we built Tango-Tango a single seat/dual seat conversion for them. Lots of fun every year when I go home for vacation.
