Rau Fasteners, established in 1912, was the leading distributor of metal snap fasteners in the nation and played a large role in the Rhode Island economy. According to the Providence Journal, the company was founded by Lues Reiter. The 1929 directory identifies Rau Fastener at the 102 Westfield Street location, with a capitalization of $100,000 under the leadership of Lues Reiter, president, and James H. Arthur, secretary-treasurer. By 1949, the company was run by Harold J. Reiter, president, and Herman Reiter, treasurer.
A 30,000 square foot addition was made in 1952, greatly enhancing the size of the complex. By 1955 the complex appears as it does today. Rau Fasteners retained ownership of the property through to 1961. According to the Providence Journal, the complex was purchased by U.S. Industries in 1968. The property was transferred to Rau Fasteners, Inc. in 1985. The most recent owner is Rhode Island Industries.

The building site bound by Westfield, Dexter and Sprague Streets was originally occupied the Providence Lithograph in 1919, and then by Rau Fastner in 1929. The building was vacant until it became a part of the Southside Investment Partnership. It is to be redeveloped for town houses, artist live/work lofts and community space. The building project is sponsored by West Elmwood Housing Development Company and by the Mill Building and Economic Revitalization Act. The building site is also considered to be a brownfield site and is eligible for several tax credits and incentives. The project is noted for encouraging business investment in the community and for its smart building initiative.

Scovill acquired the DOT line of industrial fasteners in the early 1990's and has since sold it's zipper operations and acquired PCI Group of New Bedford, MA and Daude´ of Paris, France, both manufacturers of eyelets and gromets. Additionally, the company acquired RAU Fasteners of Providence, RI and Montreal, Canada, makers of Klikit brand snaps.
