My thought on this
1. There was a top secret program where they stripped old dilapidated B-17s of every thing that was salvageable and then stuck a radio receiver in the aircraft attached to the auto pilot . They would load it with explosives and then a pilot would take it off and then bail out over friendly territory. The second plane would have a controller pilot who would remotely fly the flying bomb into the target kamikaze style .

Burt, you are thinking about the "Aphrodite" project that was based at RAF Fersfield literally a stones throw from where I live. "Aphrodite" was the USAAF project using stripped out and war weary B-17's and "Anvil" the USN led project that used a new B-24 packed with explosives.*

*Re: "Anvil". Joe Kennedy and Wilford Willy were killed when their plane blew up en route to target.

B-17 94th Bomb Group and 96th Bomb Group on display at the Eiffel Tower, 1945
View attachment 131167

94th Bomb Group and the 96th Bomb Group B-17's on display at the Eiffel Tower, August - September 1945 so a post war image of part of a display of aircraft under and around the tower area. During the late stages of the war armaments were gradually removed from some '17's as the threat from Luftwaffe attacks decreased.

Also, just after the war one or two units took part in aerial photographic surveys of Europe.

96th a/c was called "Duration Plus"
