I think it would definitely have been an issue both with weight and balance, as well as fuel consumption. I’m sure it limited the range of the aircraft .

That was an unsuccessful field mod. Have you seen the YB-40 version of the B-17 that had an extra turret and .50's which were intended as an gunship that would fly with and add extra protection the main formation? Speaking with veterans about these they said that they were pretty ineffective as the additional weight and drag made the aircraft sluggish and unable to keep up with the main formation especially once the standard 17's had dropped their bombs and were that much lighter. IIRC about a dozen were sent to the UK but found to be ineffective, that said their twin .50 chin turret design was adopted on main production models.
