For identification purposes each bomber has a letter of the alphabet (except letter I) Because bomber “U” was such a reliable aircraft and used so often, it became known as “U AGAIN”.
There are little bombs painted on the side of the bomber to denote each bombing raid. At time photo taken – 36 raids.

this Lancaster adds a few ice-cream cones to its bombing raid tally. The cones mean trips over the Alps to Italy.

Half the crew of this Lancaster are Scots, hence the emblem showing a Kangaroo wearing flying boots and lustily playing the bagpipes. The bombs represent raids over enemy territory, the ice cream cones depicting Italian targets. Flight Lieutenant A.S.MacWilliam, DFC of Sydney is leaning out of the cockpit.

The emblem "M" for Mother. This Lancaster was originally 'U' for Uncle, hence the pawnshop of "uncles" sign. The 40 bombs represent raids over enemy territory and the swastika, a night fighter which the crew shot down. "Under new Management" describes the change frU" to "M".
