Somewhere I once read the reason for this fashion for taking photos with a costumed polar bear in Germany, something with the Berlin Zoo or with advertising soft drinks. People are generally so arranged that they like to repeat after others.
Had no idea...

As it turns out, taking pictures with a grown man dressed as a polar bear was, in fact, a genuine craze beginning in the 1920s after the Berlin Zoo acquired two actual polar bears.

“Many families went to the zoo to see the bears — they were in fashion — and all of the children wanted photographs in front of the zoo with these guys in bear suits. It was a huge success in Berlin,” said Donat.

The polar bear costume itself, which remained largely unchanged throughout its questionable period of employment, remained present amid Germany’s sinister advance towards the Second World War.

And while this peculiar trend somehow lasted until the 1970s, photographic evidence of the bizarre fascination thankfully remains to this day.

The one I saw was a mini series not a film, could be different?
This mini serie was outstanding , thanks to Sir R Scott to produced this . I have read the book by D Simmons before and was not desapointed at all by the adaptation that took it at an other level of ..."reality" ( if I can say so ) . By reality I mean the way they act , the dialogues , .... Idid my home work after and found some books and fresh news about the searches for the remains of he expedition and found that the book / Mini serie were quite accurate. Btw , for the ones who thinks that the serie is not accurate , the serie depicte a book that is already an interpretation of the reality , so it's not a documentary . I LOVE the story and the amùbiance. I saw an other mini serie that makes me feel feel quite the same : The North water , a must to see !

More about Polar Bears (and then some) in 'The Terror ', where an Arctic exploration vessel is trapped in sea ice in the 1800's.
Great film
In fact , the only "the terror " movies I found were horror movies , one in 1928 and the other 1963 , both weren't depicting the tragedy of the expedition , the only one is the Ridley Scott's mini serie .
