Thanks Marcel, really interesting - in the USAAF, did the gunners choose their own positions in the aircraft, or were they assigned? Could you have refused the ball turret for instance?

assigned or not ??? i don't know......

me in the ball :? ..........surely no b... enough to be a ball turret gunner

Could be out of Lowry, as they had a gunnery training school there for the Bomber guys , and the Fighter guys out of Buckley , both in Colorado .

In the USAAF the gunners were assigned a position such as waist, tail, or ball. To my knowledge you could refuse the ball but you have been transferred right out. Ball gunners were chosen because of their short stature, and dare I say it...balls.
