You can see Sand Point Naval Air Station in the upper left background where John Chapman was a SeaBee a few years later I believe.

Do note the early tail configuration before they realized they had to fit the bird into a hangar in some unimproved areas. Boeing built the Clipper in their Renton facility and carried out tests over the lake. Ballast, take-offs/landing, taxiing as well as changes to the airframe were carried out on Lake Washington. If something went wrong the Naval Air Station was available to Boeing. Sand Point had a rather large ramp for amphibious Airplanes and enormous hangars just in case of emergencies.

Back when travel itself was part of the adventure. Now a big pain in the ass.

Great pics!

My father said when he left San Francisco going to Vietnam, he was on a Pan Am flight. They didn't call their gates "gates" but "Pier". Said it was a carry over from the Clipper days.
