With the release of Top Gun: Maverick last week, new excitement has been brought to the community of flight jacket enthusiasts. It wouldn't be a surprise if CWU's and G-1 jackets become the next fashion craze in the upcoming months. On the same note, I would like to share this NOS example of the G-1 from the first series of the 7823. This contract DA-36-243-QM(CTM)2134 was awarded by L.W. FOSTER SPORTSWEAR CO., INC. in fiscal year, 1958.
Finding an example in new condition after more than 64 years is always unbelievable. I have some examples of this specific contract and they are in great condition as well, but it will be really hard to find something better than this.
The goatskin leather is in superb condition. All parts are original to the jacket. Inside lining is pristine and shows the original purple rayon. Mouton collar is immaculate and shows the original dark chocolate shade. Knits are solid, which is very rare after all these years, even for NOS examples. Blackened Conmar zipper is mint.
On a side note, this specific contract was the same often worn by President John F. Kennedy on his sailing escapades.
