ORIGINAL GORDON & FERGUSON CO. SPEC M-422A INTERMEDIATE JACKETS NXS.416 (VR-5)

Gents,

This jacket became the main intermediate flight jacket for the USN from the beginning to the end of WWII; the spec M-422A.

This specific example was made by Gordon & Ferguson Co. under contract No. NXs 416 in 1943.

The basic design inherits the style of the M-422. Later followed by the AN6552, AN-J-3A, G-1 (55J14) and current G-1 (MIL-J-7823).

This jacket belonged Lt. W. G. Summers. He joined the U.S.N. in 1941. Eventually, he was assigned to VR-5 out of Moffett Field,
California. This was a unique assignment for him, as he flew movie stars and entertainers such as Bob Hope and Frank Sinatra to
various USO shows through out Korea, Japan, China, and the Philipines. After the Korean war, he was transferred to Jacksonville N.A.S, Florida where he continued to fly transports till his retirement as a Captain in 1961.

The condition of this jacket is amazing. It is hard to believe this jacket is almost 80 years old. All parts are original to the jacket. The goatskin is superb and the mouton collar has developed that honey brown tone. Talon zipper operates perfectly. Some staining on the lining due to the leather tanning process but this is common with G&F, and even the label is spotless. The knits are solid, which is extremely rare. “USN” stencil under collar still looks good.

Right chest depicts an extremely rare custom made "VR-5" patch with the pilot's name on the bottom.

Say no more fellas, hope you enjoy it!

Regards,
Jorge

I, too have a G&F M-422A. It's posted on "My M-422a Arrived Yesterday". Sadly, its owner, Lt. A. E. Reed, USMCR, never lived to retirement, killed in a training accident within a month of being assigned to his 1st permanent duty station, MCAS El Toro. Yours is in even better condition than mine and has a happy ending. Congratulations on a beautiful example of an M-422A.

The condition is absolutely stunning as always! It keeps on coming.
That goatskin looks new. Not just 70-years-new, but new new!
Cannot wait for the full museum experience!
