Pretty sure it's a whistle. Maybe bakelite instead of tin, or possibly painted so as not to reflect light.

Agree with you and really that doesn’t look as bad as some of the guys who wear the shoulder holster around their waist like a side arm holster .

There's a famous shot of the bombardier in the nose of. B-24 (IIRC) gettin' the last drag from a cig -- he didn't seem to need a stinkin' holder.

I just wondered how he got rid of the butt? Just crushed it (and 100 others) on the floor?

Yeah … the guy fills up most of the bubble . Almost sure to take a hit from any round that penetrates that area .
