He's kinda amazing in that his macho would be weird and so self conscious today- nobody around today can pull this off. Lee Marvin, Clint Eastwood, even James Garner (many other 60s actors too) had it- Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, or Daniel Craig? Hah! Leonard Dicaprio, Robert Downey Jr.? Like little prancing children.
True.
The king of cool! Hands down.

Not the roughout boots either. And why do you suppose he took the time to add the gaiters while escaping?

Oh yeah, Hollywood. :p

This is the first photo I have see of RAAF wearing a USN jacket, Queensland Australia catalina sqn.
People may not be aware the RN fleet air arm aircrew and deckcrew wore USN flight jackets, deck jackets etc. as the lendlease escort carriers from the US came fully equiped with stores.
RN pilots training in the US aslo received jackets.

Personal attitudes and experiences tinged with publicity, production values and media at the time.

I like Steve McQueen, I can relate to his early life and he always stayed a working class bloke but I'm not really that bothered about his films except for The Sand Pebbles and Bullit, I've always been more interested in the motorcycling side of his life.
These youtube videos, there are eight but they are only short with the English racer Sir John Whitmore talking about Steve are interesting and two mention von dutch.
I think like von dutch he probably would have been bewildered and pissed off with the way fashion brands have cashed in on his name and image.

1933-Los Angeles, CA- A feature of the National Air Races will be the leap of Spud Manning, recognized as America's most daring parachute jumper. Manning will ascend to an altitude of ten thousand feet above the field, in a plane driven by M-G-M director Clarence Brown, and bail out. He will pull a delayed jump within a hundred feet of the ground before opening his parachute, and will carry smoke pots to enable the crowd to more clearly see his fall.
