The French makers would have had a lot of stock and fewer customers shortly after D -Day. Change the label from 'Collaborator' to 'Liberator' and voilá.

...French people did what they could. Some collaborated shamefully, others resisted bravely. Most just tried to survive.
This kind of guy didn't join the resistance after D-Day.

Aside from that 'Communist leaning' he was a legend... appears he tapered and escalated the involvement with the Communists for a while.
