what you could try do do now to minimize the holes size is dampen the leather a little around the holes and gently "hammer" the holes to close them ( the round end of a Ball peen hammer works well) . Can also rub with pressure using the back of a spoon to help close the holes .

You can also use some leather filler to fill the holes . White wood glue mixed with some shoe shine could help too . Use a toothpick to fill the holes with the mix then hammer the stitch and rubb gently with a the back of a spoon till the holes look closed . You need to let the mixed filler dry and rub the excess.. then add a bit of leather cream the goal is to get the right colour. Believe me it works on small areas.

this can work well, but can be a little daunting for someone less experienced. Can also make a mess if nit done properly. The sort of thing that is best practiced first on scrap before attempting on a jacket for first time , especially in a very prominent position such as chest .
