Can I play?

Seattle Sleeper valve.jpg

Engine valve from B-17G "Seattle Sleeper" 43-37913, 91st BG H.

We brought a number of parts including a complete engine cylinder back from Holland in the 1990's for museum display. I removed the valve and kept it as a memento of several memorable trips and some good, and now sadly departed, friends both in Holland and the States.

"Delivered Cheyenne 3/6/44; Hunter 13/6/44; Presque Is 28/6/44; Assigned 323BS/91BG [OR-T] Bassingbourn 29/6/44. Missing in Action 25m Altenbeken 26/11/44 with John Stevens; enemy aircraft, exploded & crashed Haulerwijk, Holland.
MACR 10837.
Seattle Sleeper was underway from Bassingbourn to Altenbeken in Germany. The intention was to bomb and destroy the railroad viaduct, being the vital supply line for all sorts of war goods to the Ruhr industrial district. About ten minutes before bombing the Initial Point the squadron was attacked by 40 German fighters.
The Seattle Sleeper left the battle badly battered, other planes were less lucky. During its dive from 18000 ft to about 11000 ft it managed to destroy the attacking German hunter aircraft ME-109 Messerschmitt."

While I sold my last collection some years ago I do still have some original gear around and also tend to keep my eyes open for associated bits and bobs. I picked this up in our local auction this morning. Not in the antiques or specialist militaria, no, it was tucked away amid the dross of the weekly general sale.

"Hurricane Heroes" by Nicolas Trudgeon, low number in a ruin of 450, signed by 3 BoB pilots:

Wing Commander ROLAND BEAMONT (flew with 87 Squadron in 1940)
Squadron Leader LAWRENCE THOROGOOD (flew with 87 Squadron in 1940)
Group Captain TOM DALTON MORGAN

Bit of a bargain.

That’s really nice. Nick Trudgeon, one of my lecturers when I studied technical illustration at Camborne Tech in the ‘80’s. Lovely bloke, was quite surprised when he became an aviation artist, he was always into trains in those days.
