Mouton.....

To be fair, I think that Eastman's mouton currently shown in the photos of his G-1 and M422A looks correct.
What don't you like about it?
(Have you seen Aero's? it's terrible).

For most of the time they have been making USN jackets they have not been using proper mouton. Instead they used a course curly wool typically found on later 7823D type jackets.

I had a look at one of their new G1 jackets at American Classics store in London, a definite improvement.

BTW. I asked them whether they sell many ELC jackets given they are more expensive than the website and they said no. They are more of a London showroom for ELC where people can try the jackets on. They have some sort arrangement with Eastman in that regard. Sounds like a good idea.

I have both Aero and ELC M422A jackets. The mouton on both are terrible. Here they are, after trying to brush/comb out the curlies. These jackets, while bought second hand, were in like new condition.

My Eastman G&F M-422a started nice enough but rapidly changed to the photos posted. Thats my point about most modern mouton.

these look like synthetic moutons to me

I also have an original with mouton replaced by aero, it's different than above, but still terrible.

If you look at my review of my 5 year plus old ELC G1 you can see that the mouton on mine looks slightly better in quality and colour than the photos shown in this thread but after seeing ELC's latestest offerings at DUxford, their mouton has definitely improved in both colour and quality shame about their jackets which were a bit poor to be honest.

a mouton observation.

i spent a number of years in the sheep ranching business. There are basically 2 classifications of sheep breeds: medium wool and fine wool. most medium wool sheep are selected for meat production and wool is a 2nd consideration. most of the wool from medium wool breeds are used for carpeting, etc. fine wool breeds are selected for wool quality and their wool is used for clothing.
as a G-1 fan, i've seen lots of mouton. the mouton in the three pictures previous to my post are probably from a medium wool breed. the older mouton in vintage jackets is usually from fine wool breeds.
the difference is just what the classification says. on the older, fine wool mouton, the fibers are smaller in diameter and much softer and more pliable. this is effect where, when you brush the mouton different directions, the color changes a bit.
i have bought a number of ~1950s-rea ladies mouton coats. as others have said, it's a bit of a gamble on color and fiber length. but you can definitely tell if it is the type mouton you want.
the mouton in the last 3 pix here are not nearly as comfortable to wear as the softer, vintage fine wool mouton.
i know all of your were extremely interested in a study of sheep breeds.
BTW, i have some very nice mouton from the last coat i bought. i used one piece on a jacket i sold on ebay:

i have more for $20 if anyone is interested.

The Real McCoy's mouton on their G-1 doesn't look great either.

Hmmm. I'd have to personally disagree. That looks just like the Aero sheerling I got on my custom HBD jacket and I love it. This is ("accuracy" aside) personal taste.

Yeah, I love that too on my Gucci coat (which I bought back when I could afford such things),
but I was talking accuracywise.

I've not personally seen enough of those jackets to judge. OTOH, I also am going to wear it, so to be overly picky isn't in my gameplan. To enjoy it is.

Based on the moutons I have on some originals, I agree the quality doesn't look as good. However, this is better than on my Aero, and ELC.
