Extracted from the latest Flypast magazine with a Luftwaffe theme 3 different jackets that personally I’ve not seen before. Note how near the neck the shoulders boards are in the first pic. Although both in second pic are similar there an A1 look about them!
The Pilot on the left looks as though he is wearing a 1939 Italian Pilot wings. I remember many years ago some guy on another site stated that German/ Axis Pilots never wore jackets with the zippered front hand pockets. I said that was non sense-mentioning that tons of private purchased jackets had all kinds of front pockets at numerous angles- some buttoned, snapped or zippered. The only issue is to show a photo with Pilots wearing it to establish that it existed. My argument has always been that MOST pilots did not fly wearing all their decorations on their private purchased jackets due to easily breaking off the pin and latch hence the move to cloth insignias. Leaving the more formal looking badges and insignias for dress uniforms. Some pilots after their pin was broken off used numerous ways to attach it. (another member stated that is was easily replaced when lost or broken-.....my rebuttal was it was not that easy while stationed on the Eastern Front and replacement awards had to be paid for-they were not free.) Excuse typos....my left hand is in a cast ....AGAIN! Last month I was chain sawing limbs when one limb bounced up from the ground hitting the ladder knocking it out from under me and I fell from 10 feet hitting a concrete planter breaking my 3,4,5th Metacarpals and my 4th medial phalange was off my finger pointing back at me. Also breaking the ribs at my back just below the Scapula near the T 3,4,5 ribs near the column. That was not the worst part. The Radiologist said Tumors are shown inside my bones. They said I need a biopsy taken from my femur bone to see if it is malignant. I said, that would be a waste of money to know since I dont have the money to do any treatments.
While in the ER my daughter screamed, " You are f-king cursed with bad luck! It better not be f-king genetic! " I yelled back at her----- " if it is- then it is from YOUR MOTHER'S CURSE because she is the witch who rides a broom custom made by Versace!!"
All the best for 2025 Rory, to you and your daughter.
The eagle on the left jacket ( Hajo Herrmann wearing it ) is an early drop tail eagle .. with a large pin. ( photo 1)
And … yes you are 101% correct.. whilst strapped in.. no awards nor any other decorations.. for the photos only ( there are many photos showing Bubi Hartmann returning from a mission wearing a totally plave jacket even without shoulder boards ).
You are also right, many privat purchased leather jacket had hand warmer pockets with zips taken from a flight suit.. with large pullers and tabs. ( photo 2).
All the best Rory!
You are right I can see the detail now better with your photo of it. I have a drop tail ( I totally forgot about those versions) Oh god now my memory IS GONE TOO? I am so screwed!.....since I could not see the swastika looking as though obscured, it appeared looking like the early Italian one. Best you too Pilot.
I am getting rid of everything I own-my art collection, all my WW2 collection, Japanese Swords, selling my house....everything
