New to the forum.
Just purchased a Star Sportswear (1970 vintage) and was wondering if anyone knows whether the collar is real mouton or faux? (It’s still on its way to me, so I haven’t had a chance to examine it yet — Photo attached.)
Thanks.

Same. The D-series was when the Navy first started exploring fake fur, so this is absolutely typical. The give-away is that Dynel fur started out black and faded to gray, like this one.

Whilst it is/was Dynal it could have been replaced if thats what bugged you but, probably not worth doing in cost terms. Virtually if not all 70’s G1’s were faux fur collared as mentioned. Plenty of mouton collared G1’s pop up here/evil bay!!!

Thanks! Yeah, finding a mouton-collared one (or just a good repro) shouldn't be too hard. Might cost a bit more than one of the Dynel ones, but you can still find them for reasonable prices.
Just found this one. Still a 7823D, but from 1968 with the mouton collar for $325 and free shipping.

Not bad at all - assuming the rest of the shots are like that one, it looks like you wouldn't have to do any repair work. Best to check the measurements though to make sure it would fit. The sizing on flight jackets is all over the map.

There’s a big difference in the two photos of the jacket that you posted . Almost looks like two different jackets . Photos can be very deceiving , I would ask for addition photos of the jacket in various types of lighting and particularly outdoors photos .

If I'm understanding correctly, the two photos are of two different jackets. The first one was a Star that he sent back because it had the Dynel collar. The second one is another 7823D, but with a mouton collar, that he's contemplating buying.

Shame on me ! That will teach me to read the entire thread before I comment !
Thanks for pointing that out .

Just received the 1968 7823D. Very pleased. Will have to replace the cuffs and waistband, which I expected. Anything I need to know when shopping? Natural vs synthetic? Original vs updated?

Also, does anyone know what AER, WEP, WP, and AS acronyms mean?

I'd just send it to either Steve Sellers or Dave Sheeley and let them do it. They both do stellar repair work. They can provide you with the correct knits as well. As for the acronyms, @tda003 answered that question in this thread: https://www.vintageleatherjackets.org/threads/“a-better-fighting-garment…”-a-beginner’s-guide-to-the-us-navy’s-wwii-era-and-later-intermediate-flight-jackets.27377/post-340043

Post some pics when you get a chance. :)
Thanks for the link. I had tried a search but to no avail — still getting use to forum formats and nuances. I’ll try and get photos of both jackets when completed: The first, with patches of all my duty stations while serving both Active Duty and in the Reserves, and the second, 1968 7823D plain with no patches.
