Back in WW2 any of the original makers probably were recruiting machinists like mad from wherever they could get them to make jackets for contract commitments. One day making curtains, the next day flying jackets. Ok, maybe not curtains but you get my drift.

So why is it that if the originals we’re all over the place with their own signatures, then why is it that the BK’s, Headwinds, Aero’s and all are treated as somehow second league to GW by some here.

I’m further bemused in that originals were mass produced to meet contracts, but JC is a oneman band with a 2 year lead time so what would he do with a wartime contract?

I’d like specific details of what people see that makes GW superior and why even the best efforts of the competition can’t match a wartime mass produced original please.

As a qualified tailor and a designer long before I ever saw an A-2 I look at jackets slightly differently from many (most) on VLJ I may have a different take on what's superb, good or dreadful.
John's recreations of WW2 Military jackets are pretty much technically flawless, although, despite the 100% correct fittings, they are not perfect "reproductions", the stitching is too precise and he takes far too long putting them together.

Ditto some of the Japanese makers although from our experience repairing Japanese miltary jackets, these are not made to be repaired as they use far too much glue inside the jacket. A glued seam is SO much easier to sew, nothing moves, everyting's flat, not like a leather seam at all really. The problem comes when a repair to a seam or a new zipper is needed....................:>(

Goodwear's Civvy jackets are probably closer to "original" although to my "designer's" eye John has problems positioning his pockets.

With all respect to Headwind, DD and several other "start up" one man operations that received rave reviews on VLJ over recent years, the quality of their work is not in the same league as John's, ELC or BK, it takes more than materials to make a perfect jacket, although in all honesty DD's are probably nearer to WW2 "quality" than most, GW included (sorry John) or take a look at the thread "17 Years Hard Wear" to see a jacket that was sewn together (WW2 Style) in just over one hour. Maybe Aero should tell our A-2 machinists that they need to make 6 or 7 a day intead of their usual two!

It must be extremely difficult getting started these days but I don't think we are doing aanyone any favours by heaping praise on jackets that wouldn't get past quality control in a "proper" factory.

We should praise high grade work and give constructive critisism to start ups, we aren't helping them by not pointing out obvious errors, that's how over the years Aero have trained so many high grade machinists, sure it meant an awful lot of "apprentice" jackets to get rid off............... although it did help that when we started we were the only outfit doing what we did but we still had to clear a lot of iffy jackets for less than cost in Campden Lock, today it's hard to walk down the road without tripping over a "new kid on the block"

I always found him to be very helpful to me and was my point of contact when buying Bill Kelso jackets.

Now I am the enemy and Goodwear evil incarnate ... and I don’t even own a Goodwear jacket.

What the hell happened. Why so bitter and to Everyman and his dog it seems.
Did Platon get fired from Bill Kelso. I always thought he had ownership.
Is that why the deep anger is there.

What about that Andy? I would only ever consider buying a BK if the controversial characters are corrected or punished for bad behaviors.
