M-422a not legit

According to the 31st Air Group website they only flew Hellcat fighters aside from various light bombers. Patch artwork looks different too. No M422A jackets in pilot photo's or a Lt Mann either. See link.

I am not positive about this, but I have heard that the USN never allowed jackets to be painted. I was under the impression it was only the AAF the painted up the jackets with art. If this is the case, then there are no original painted USN jackets. Just tribute pieces made from originals.

This same seller had a really nice painted P-61 Black Widow A-2 he sold at the show. Nice Aussie made squadron patch, P-61 painted on the back and name strip. I almost pulled the trigger, but someone else (who is a forum member) did before I made up my mind.

though not officially "us service". some guys m-422s, 422as had chest patches on their jackets, as we all know. as to the material? i reckon it varied from jac to jac, with no set designs. ditto, blood chits. however, i have yet to see a wwll navy issued jacket with art work on the back.

Most original WW2 Navy squadron patches were printed or painted on canvas material. Some others were painted on leather or directly on the jacket. Multi piece leather would be very odd. Back paintings on WW2 Navy jackets is always a reason to take pause

I'd have to say that most USN Aviation patches I've seen were fully embroidered or at least partially embroidered on a twill backing, and some chenille. Have seen some printed ones and even sheets of them with registration marks but relatively few compared to embroidery. Same goes for USMC Aviation, I know of only one stencil painted onto canvas or maybe it was aircraft fabric. Multi-piece leather originals I just don't think so unless it was a private purchase, if this jacket is even remotely legit that's the case. The Navy and USMC regs were just too strict unlike the AAF.

Sean, you are correct that there were also embroidered patches for the USN and USMC. I accidentally left those out. Many more of the actual USN not USMC patches were on canvas though.

Here are a couple out of my personal collection for reference sake.....
